Celebration of the Noble Valley vineyards and the Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé on May 1st
Every May 1st, the village of Soultzmatt dons its finest attire to celebrate spring and its wine heritage. Nestled in the Noble Valley, one of Alsace's sunniest valleys, this wine-growing commune, where about twenty winegrowing families have cultivated nearly 300 hectares of vines since the 9th century, takes advantage of this public holiday to welcome visitors to its cellars and vineyard trails.
Soultzmatt's jewel is the Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé, whose name means "sun's head" due to its south/southeast exposure that fully captures the sun's rays. This 68-hectare slope climbs steep hillsides up to 430 meters, producing wines of exceptional richness and complexity. Soultzmatt holds the record for the Alsatian commune producing the most late harvests and selections of noble berries. Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Gris from Zinnkoepflé reach remarkable fullness here.
Soultzmatt's wine estates open their doors for tastings of their finest vintages. Among the village's emblematic winegrowers are the estates of René Fleck (winegrowers since 1640), Paul Kubler, Gérard Nicollet, Schirmer, Martin Klein, and Jean Boesch. Each cellar offers a tasting journey highlighting the diversity of Alsatian grape varieties and the specificity of the Noble Valley terroir, from Crémant d'Alsace to Grand Crus.
The day is also an opportunity to discover the local products of the Noble Valley. Cheeses, artisanal charcuterie, honeys, jams, and Alsatian specialties make up a gourmet market that accompanies the wine tastings. At lunchtime, traditional catering offers regional dishes in a friendly atmosphere. All this takes place within the framework of the Egg and Chick Market, an emblematic spring event in Soultzmatt, which celebrates its 15th edition in 2026.
The Soultzmatt vineyard trail offers visitors the chance to explore the Zinnkoepflé hillsides and discover the spectacular landscape of the Noble Valley. The walk through the terraced vineyards, with views of the Vosges and the Alsace plain, allows visitors to understand the uniqueness of this terroir, classified as Natura 2000 for its ecological richness. The pilgrimage to Schaeferthal and Soultzmatt's mineral springs complete the discoveries of this day.
Soultzmatt is a unique village in Alsace, famous for both its mineral waters (Lisbeth spring, Nessel spring) and its wines. This duality between water and wine, between thermalism and viticulture, gives the village a unique identity. The May 1st Wine Festival is an opportunity to celebrate this dual heritage in a preserved natural setting, at the foot of the Vosges mountains, where millennia-old wine tradition meets the benefits of thermal waters.
On May 1st, 2026, Soultzmatt will celebrate a new edition of its Wine Festival in the Noble Valley. The village's winegrowers will open their cellars for tastings of Soultzmatt's finest vintages, featuring the cuvées of Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé — exceptional Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Gris.
The day will be associated with the 15th Egg and Chick Market (starting at 8:30 AM), with its farm animals, local products — cheeses, charcuterie, honeys, jams — and family entertainment. The vineyard trail will offer walks through the Natura 2000-classified Zinnkoepflé hillsides.
Soultzmatt is located 20 km south of Colmar and 25 km northwest of Mulhouse, in the Noble Valley.
From 8:30 AM for the Egg and Chick Market. Cellars open and tastings all day. Lunch service.
Free admission. Tastings are free or at a modest price depending on the estate.
