The Saint-Pierre Cathedral of Saint-Claude: an architectural and musical gem
The Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul, and Saint-André Cathedral of Saint-Claude is one of the most remarkable religious buildings in the Jura. Built between the 14th and 18th centuries, it blends Gothic and classical styles in a harmonious architectural ensemble. Formerly the abbey church of the powerful chapter of Saint-Claude, it was elevated to the rank of cathedral in 1742 with the creation of the diocese of Saint-Claude.
An exceptional grand organ
The cathedral houses a high-quality grand organ, which is one of its musical treasures. This instrument, regularly maintained and restored, offers a remarkable sound palette that unfolds in the generous acoustics of the Gothic nave. Organ recitals are at the heart of the summer concert programming, attracting renowned organists.
Concerts for all audiences
The Summer Concerts of Saint-Pierre Cathedral offer a varied program:
- Organ recitals: performance of classical, baroque, and romantic repertoire on the cathedral's grand organ
- Chamber music: instrumental and vocal ensembles in the acoustic setting of the nave
- Sacred music: works from the religious repertoire (motets, cantatas, requiems)
- Baroque music: programming linked to the Haut-Jura Music Festival
The Haut-Jura Music Festival
The cathedral concerts are part of the broader Haut-Jura Music Festival, which for over 35 years has offered a program of classical and baroque music in the heritage sites of the Saint-Claude region. This festival, held mainly in May-June, uses the cathedral as one of its main concert venues.
A heritage to discover
Beyond the music, a visit to the cathedral allows you to discover:
- The Renaissance choir stalls: a set of 68 stalls carved in the 15th century, classified as a Historic Monument
- The altarpiece of Saint-Pierre: a masterpiece of Gothic art
- The stained glass windows: stained glass from different periods of construction
- The Chapel of the Pipe Masters: dedicated to the pipe makers of Saint-Claude
