Strasbourg's grand free open-air concert
The iconic summer event of the Alsatian capital, Symphonie des Arts brings together thousands of spectators every late June at the Jardin des Deux Rives for two days of free open-air concerts. The highlight of the weekend is the concert by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg under the stars, a moment of grace where classical music is accessible to the widest audience in an exceptional natural setting on the banks of the Rhine. Rock, jazz, pop, world music, and opera arias make up an eclectic and festive program.
Symphonie des Arts is one of the highlights of the Strasbourg summer, a free and popular event organized by the City of Strasbourg at the Jardin des Deux Rives, an iconic cross-border park located between Strasbourg and Kehl. For two days in late June, this cultural gathering celebrates musical and artistic diversity in a green and friendly setting on the banks of the Rhine.
The most anticipated moment of each edition is the open-air concert by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg (OPS), traditionally scheduled for Saturday evening at 9:30 PM. Thousands of spectators, settled on the lawns with blankets and picnic baskets, attend an exceptional symphonic program – opera arias, romantic overtures, great orchestral works – in a magical atmosphere where classical music breaks free from the concert hall walls to be enjoyed in the open air.
Symphonie des Arts is not just about the OPS concert. Starting in the afternoon, two stages host an eclectic program mixing rock, jazz, pop, rap, French chanson, world music, and international music. Local and regional artists, emerging bands, and established groups take turns, offering a vibrant panorama of the Alsatian and European music scene.
Beyond the concerts, Symphonie des Arts offers a festive guinguette with food and drink, artistic workshops for all ages, and activities that make this event a moment of intergenerational sharing. The setting of the Jardin des Deux Rives – its lawns, its footbridge connecting France and Germany, its views of the Rhine – adds a symbolic dimension to an event that embodies Strasbourg's European and cultural vocation.
Each edition attracts several thousand spectators, making Symphonie des Arts one of the most attended free cultural events in Strasbourg.
