Festival of Catalan and Occitan languages and cultures in Elne
Total Festum Elne is the local version of the Total Festum festival, a major event created by the Occitanie Region to celebrate and promote Catalan and Occitan languages and cultures throughout the regional territory. In Elne, the former capital of Roussillon with its rich historical heritage, the festival takes on a special dimension thanks to the deep roots of Catalan culture in this ancient city.
The festival traditionally takes place around the summer solstice, between the Fête de la Musique on June 21st and the Focs de Sant Joan (Saint-Jean's Fires) on June 23rd. These few days feature concerts, shows, activities, and festive traditions that bring Catalan heritage to life in the streets and squares of Elne's historic center.
A highlight of the festival, the arrival of the Flame of Canigou on Saint-Jean's Eve is a moment of collective emotion. The Giants of Elne and Thuir accompany the flame through the streets of the historic district, led by the music of the Cornagrallers, a group of traditional musicians from Elne playing Catalan wind instruments. The lighting of the bonfire concludes this solemn procession, followed by a fireworks display launched from the apses of the cloister garden.
The Total Festum Elne program includes the Fête de la Musique with several music stages spread throughout the town: the music school presents its end-of-year show with instrumental classes, the choir, and contemporary music groups, while other stages host Catalan and independent musicians from 9 PM onwards. Groups from Southern Catalonia complete the program, in a spirit of cross-border fraternity.

The Illiberian city, former capital of Roussillon, hosts the Fête de la Musique and the Focs de Sant Joan, two highlights that punctuate the summer solstice in the historic center.
Several music stages are spread throughout the city: the Elne Music School presents its end-of-year show (instrumental classes — double bass, piano, guitar, drums, trumpet and traditional Catalan instruments, choir and contemporary music) on the orientation table, while the Place de la République hosts invited Catalan groups. Free entertainment until late in the evening.
An emblematic highlight of the festival: the Canigó Flame arrives in Elne in the early evening. Reading of the universal message of Saint John in French and Catalan by children from Elne's bilingual classes. The Giants (Gegants) of Elne and Thuir accompany the flame through the streets of the historic district, carried by the music of the Cornagrallers, a group of traditional musicians from Elne playing Catalan wind instruments. The lighting of the brazier concludes the solemn procession, followed by a fireworks display launched from the apses of the cloister garden.
For 2026, the second part of the Saint John's Eve vigil will be animated by Julivert, a Catalan group composed of musicians performing popular and tavern songs (violin, accordion, guitar, bass). An evening of cross-border fraternity in the spirit of Total Festum.
