About Pyramides Noires

The Trail des Pyramides Noires is a nature running event organized every year in May by the Mission Bassin Minier, starting from the historic 9-9bis site in Oignies. Created in 2014, this iconic trail offers distances from 10 to 115 km across the slag heaps of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Runners tackle spectacular landscapes shaped by mining history, between black pyramids, rider paths, and reclaimed natural spaces. A children's race (1.5 km) and a Nordic walk complete the offering.

The trail that thrills the Mining Basin

Since 2014, the Trail des Pyramides Noires (TPN) has become one of the most emblematic sporting events in Hauts-de-France. Organized by the Mission Bassin Minier, it invites runners to discover and tackle the slag heaps, these artificial hills inherited from three centuries of coal mining. The setting is unique: the routes cross a territory inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 2012, where nature has reclaimed the former industrial sites.

Courses for all levels

The TPN offers a range of distances adapted to all runner profiles:

  • Trail des Galibots (1.5 km): a race reserved for children, to discover trail running as a family
  • 10 km: an accessible distance to get started with trail running on the slag heaps
  • 23 km: the historic TPN event, with a hilly course between slag heaps and "cavaliers" (former railway paths)
  • 23 km Nordic walking: the same course adapted for walkers
  • 46 km: a technical challenge that crosses many slag heaps of the basin
  • 70 km: a demanding distance for experienced trail runners, possible in a three-person relay
  • 115/123 km: the ultra-trail, nocturnal start from Auchel for a complete crossing of the Mining Basin

A unique playground

The slag heaps offer surprising elevation gain for a region known for being flat. The ascents are short but steep, the descents technical on black shale, and the "cavaliers" paths — former mining railway lines — connect the different sites. Runners pass through places steeped in history: the Loos-en-Gohelle slag heap (the highest in Europe), Base 11/19, the 9-9bis site where coal was discovered in 1842, and many other heritage sites.

A strong local connection

The Trail des Pyramides Noires is much more than a race: it is a tool for enhancing the territory. The event helps to change perceptions of the Mining Basin, by showcasing the beauty of these transformed landscapes and the richness of their biodiversity. The Mission Bassin Minier, a public institution created in 2000, carries out this project as part of its mission to renew the mining territory.

A supportive and festive event

Beyond the competition, the TPN cultivates a spirit of solidarity and conviviality. The arrival at the 9-9bis site transforms into a real celebration with generous refreshments, musical entertainment, and a partners' village. The 2026 edition, the eleventh of its name, brought together 2,141 runners at the start across the six timed formats, with Muriel Hurtis (former European athletics champion) as godmother of the inclusive project «accessible to all» — confirming the TPN as the largest trail in Northern France.

Pyramides Noires — edition 2026

11th edition of the Trail des Pyramides Noires, organized on May 8 and 9, 2026 by the Mission Bassin Minier, with finishes at the 9-9bis site in Oignies. The 123 km ultra (23 slag heaps, 1,800 m D+) started from Auchel on Friday, May 8 at 11 PM, followed on Saturday, May 9 by starts from Noeux-les-Mines (70 km), Liévin (46 km), and the 9-9bis site (23 km, 23 km Nordic walking, 10 km). 2,141 runners at the start for 2,501 registered, and Muriel Hurtis (former European athletics champion) godmother of the inclusive project “accessible to all”.

An 11th edition under the heat

The 2026 edition of the Trail des Pyramides Noires took place on May 8 and 9 under demanding conditions, marked by significant heat on most of the courses. With 2,141 runners actually at the start out of 2,501 registered, the event confirms its status as the largest trail in Northern France and the regional network of its starts (Auchel, Noeux-les-Mines, Liévin, Oignies), all oriented towards a common finish at the 9-9bis site.

The 123 km ultra: a 4-second finish

The 123 km race, which started from Auchel on Friday, May 8 at 11 PM, delivered an epic finish: Xavier Chaussoy won in 12 h 26'14", beating Ricky Hannecart by only 4 seconds. Victorien Renault completed the podium in 13 h 37'. On the women's side, Céline Dubreux won the event in 17 h 53', ahead of Audrey Albicocco (18 h 35') and Aurélie Pottiez (18 h 43'). Only 16 women were at the start of the 123 km, 9 of whom reached the 9-9bis.

Five other timed formats

In the 70 km race (start Noeux-les-Mines, 13 slag heaps, 1,000 m D+), 225 runners finished, with Mathieu Buirette winning ahead of Fabrice Grindel and Clément Proot. The 46 km race (start Liévin, 9 slag heaps, 550 m D+) gathered 359 finishers, with Madani Iadadaine as the winner, followed by Pierre Maleszka and Etienne Lery. The 23 km race saw 557 finishers, dominated by Valentin Visez, Joaquim Crespo, and Maxime Delcourt. Finally, the 10 km race (2 slag heaps, 100 m D+) brought together 571 finishers, with Léo Himmesoete on the top step, ahead of Tommy Dewitte and Mathieu Demuynck.

Relays and hiking

The event also offered relay formats (4 teams on 115/123 km, 11 on 70 km, 8 on 46 km) as well as a 23 km Nordic walking event, which gathered 178 walkers on the same route as the discovery trail. The overall distribution of participants was 64% men and 36% women.

An inclusive event

Muriel Hurtis, former European athletics champion, participated as godmother of the “accessible to all” project led by the Mission Bassin Minier, highlighting the solidarity and inclusive dimension of the weekend.
