Conquer the slag heaps of the UNESCO World Heritage Mining Basin
Since 2014, the Trail des Pyramides Noires (TPN) has become one of the most emblematic sporting events in Hauts-de-France. Organized by the Mission Bassin Minier, it invites runners to discover and tackle the slag heaps, these artificial hills inherited from three centuries of coal mining. The setting is unique: the routes cross a territory inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 2012, where nature has reclaimed the former industrial sites.
The TPN offers a range of distances adapted to all runner profiles:
The slag heaps offer surprising elevation gain for a region known for being flat. The ascents are short but steep, the descents technical on black shale, and the "cavaliers" paths — former mining railway lines — connect the different sites. Runners pass through places steeped in history: the Loos-en-Gohelle slag heap (the highest in Europe), Base 11/19, the 9-9bis site where coal was discovered in 1842, and many other heritage sites.
The Trail des Pyramides Noires is much more than a race: it is a tool for enhancing the territory. The event helps to change perceptions of the Mining Basin, by showcasing the beauty of these transformed landscapes and the richness of their biodiversity. The Mission Bassin Minier, a public institution created in 2000, carries out this project as part of its mission to renew the mining territory.
Beyond the competition, the TPN cultivates a spirit of solidarity and conviviality. The arrival at the 9-9bis site transforms into a real celebration with generous refreshments, musical entertainment, and a partners' village. The 2026 edition, the eleventh of its name, brought together 2,141 runners at the start across the six timed formats, with Muriel Hurtis (former European athletics champion) as godmother of the inclusive project «accessible to all» — confirming the TPN as the largest trail in Northern France.
