Magical Christmas Market in the troglodytic caves of Doué-en-Anjou
The Troglodytic Christmas Market of Doué-en-Anjou is a unique winter event that transforms the troglodytic arenas of Doué-la-Fontaine into a magical setting on the first weekend of December. Created in the late 1990s, this market hosts over 70 artisan exhibitors in the underground cavities dug into the falun, offering an immersive scenography and family-friendly activities. With a capacity of over 13,000 visitors over two days, it has become a must-see event for the Anjou heritage.
Every year, on the first weekend of December, the Arènes de Doué-la-Fontaine are transformed into a magical place to host the Troglodytic Christmas Market. Organized by the municipality of Doué-en-Anjou since the late 1990s, this one-of-a-kind event attracts thousands of visitors to discover local crafts in an exceptional underground setting.
The troglodytic cavities of the Arènes, dug into the falun and classified as heritage sites, offer a naturally spectacular backdrop. More than 70 exhibitors—artisans, creators, and local producers—occupy these underground galleries to present their creations: jewelry, ceramics, textiles, gourmet products, Christmas decorations, and art objects. The immersive scenography created especially for the occasion transforms the caves into a magical universe that delights both young and old.
Beyond the artisan stalls, the market offers family-friendly activities throughout the weekend. On Saturday evening, an exceptional late opening allows visitors to discover the market in an even more magical atmosphere, with an evening show. The illuminations and lighting of the underground cavities create a unique ambiance that distinguishes this market from all other Christmas markets in the region.
The success of the Troglodytic Christmas Market continues unabated. With a capacity set at 7,500 visitors on Saturday and 6,500 on Sunday, online ticketing opens in October, and tickets sell out quickly. This rigorous management of visitor numbers ensures a quality experience for every visitor in this sensitive heritage site.
The Arènes de Doué-la-Fontaine are an exceptional troglodytic site, dug into the falun, a characteristic shell limestone rock from the Doué subsoil. These cavities, whose exploitation dates back several centuries, form a unique underground natural amphitheater in France. The Christmas market showcases this geological and architectural heritage by transforming it into a place for exchange and discovery, contributing to the tourist appeal of Doué-en-Anjou, also known as the Rose Capital and for its Bioparc, a unique troglodytic zoo in the world.
The Christmas Market takes place at the Arènes de Doué-la-Fontaine, Rue des Arènes, 49700 Doué-en-Anjou.
Ticketing is exclusively online, opening mid-October. No tickets sold on-site. Price: 6 euros, free for children under 12 (mandatory free ticket required).
