The Illuminated Villages: a unique show in France

Since 1996, the Villages Illuminés competition has brought together more than twenty communes in the Orne bocage and southern Calvados each winter in a friendly and magical competition. What started as a local competition has become a unique phenomenon in France, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year to the roads of the Norman bocage.

The Art of Volunteers

The magic of the Illuminated Villages relies on the extraordinary commitment of hundreds of volunteers in each participating commune. Throughout the year, these enthusiasts design and create thousands of original illuminated decorative motifs: characters, animals, scenes of rural life, tales and legends, whimsical creations, and animated tableaux.

Artisanal Creations

Each village develops its own style and theme. The creations range from traditional garlands to monumental light sculptures, including elaborate staged scenes that tell stories and amaze both young and old. Originality and creativity are at the heart of the approach.

A Journey Through the Bocage

Visitors are invited to travel the bocage roads to discover the illuminations of each participating commune. Among the regularly awarded villages: La Sauvagère, Céaucé, Beauchêne, Rouellé, Saint-Mars-d'Égrenne, Mantilly, and many others. Each village offers a different experience, encouraging visitors to explore the entire circuit.

Festive Activities

In addition to the illuminations, the communes offer Christmas markets, luminous walks, family activities, and tastings of local products. These events contribute to the conviviality and social connection in the Orne countryside during the winter season.

A Free and Popular Event

Access to the illuminations is completely free. The lights turn on every evening around 5:30 PM and turn off around 10 PM (11 PM during school holidays), offering visitors long evenings of luminous walks in the Norman bocage.
