Rio Loco in Toulouse, Canigou flame, sculptures in Montauban: Occitanie June 13-14

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the world music festival Rio Loco on the banks of the Garonne to the Aplec del Canigó, the Catalan pilgrimage to the sacred mountain, ten events span Occitanie this weekend.

This weekend of June 13 and 14, Occitanie deals simultaneously in grand spectacle and intimate ritual. Rio Loco sets its stage on the banks of the Cours Dillon in Toulouse for its 27th edition, with a world music programme that ranks among the most coherent in France. At the other end of the region, Catalan delegations climb through the night up Canigou to light the solstice flame — one of the oldest rites still alive in the Pyrenees. In between, a dozen events cover BD in the Gers, vintage cars in the Tarn, Occitan culture in Lozère and sculpture in Montauban. Our pick of the week goes to the Aplec del Canigó: you don't go there to listen to music or admire an exhibition — you hike up in the dark, bundle of wood on your shoulder, and it's one of the most singular experiences you can have in June in the South of France.

Rio Loco in Toulouse (31): world music on the banks of the Garonne

From the banks of the Garonne, Rio Loco unfolds its 27th edition from Wednesday June 10 to Sunday June 14 at the Cours Dillon, in the Saint-Cyprien neighbourhood. Founded in 2000, this world music festival has built over the years a solid reputation on the quality of its thematic programming — each edition focuses on a specific geographic zone or cultural area, giving it a rare editorial consistency. The setting is a riverside meadow with a view of the Grave dome, stages face each other, and access is free for part of the time. This closing weekend concentrates the edition's headline acts: check the detailed programme on the official site for confirmed artists. Rio Loco is one of the must-see summer fixtures of greater Toulouse — family-friendly by day, festive in the evening.

Le Printemps des Comédiens in Montpellier (34): theatre at the top at the Domaine d'O

One of France's biggest theatre festivals after Avignon continues its run at the Domaine d'O. Le Printemps des Comédiens presents around forty shows through June 21 in this exceptional Montpellier park, between pools and open-air stages. This mid-festival weekend is often the richest: the most anticipated productions are on the bill, French and international directors are still present, and the Domaine d'O atmosphere, between pinewood and evening light, hits its stride. It's a regional benchmark for all those who follow contemporary creation — theatre, dance and hybrid forms. A good match with an evening meal on a restaurant terrace in the neighbourhood.

Aplec del Canigó in Casteil (66): the Catalan flame at the summit of the sacred mountain

This is our pick of the weekend, and it has nothing to do with a stage or a concert hall. Every year, the weekend before June 23, delegations of Catalan villages — from both sides of the Pyrenees — hike up the Canigou massif to light the Flama del Canigó at the summit. The Aplec del Canigó gathers this year on June 13 and 14 walkers from across Catalonia, each carrying a bundle of wood marked with the name of their village, deposited at the foot of the cross at 2,784 metres. The flame is then brought back down to the villages to light the midsummer fires. This is not a festival in the classical sense: it's a living rite, at once athletic, cultural and deeply symbolic for Catalan identity. The night ascent from Casteil or from the Cortalets refuge is a physical and sensory experience unlike any other. Full mountain gear required.

Festival de Nîmes (30): the Arenas open for summer concerts

The summer concert season at the Nîmes Arenas is under way. Le Festival de Nîmes, 54th edition, programmes from mid-June to late July national and international artists in this outstanding Roman monument, one of the best-preserved in the world. This weekend of June 13-14 marks the first dates of the season: check the official site for confirmed artists and times. The acoustics of the Arenas, the Roman setting and the warmth of Gard evenings make a combination that few concert venues can match. If you have never seen a concert here, this is a chance not to let pass. Advance booking is essential for headline dates.

Festival Rock'&'Cars in Lavaur (81): blues, rockabilly and 800 classic vehicles

In the Jardin de l'Évêché in Lavaur, the Rock'&'Cars Festival brings together this weekend more than 800 vintage vehicles — American cars, Hot Rods, Kustoms — and hundreds of legendary motorcycles including many Harley-Davidsons, against a backdrop of blues, rockabilly, soul and rock'n'roll concerts. Founded in 2005, this free, popular Tarn festival has become over twenty years one of the great fifties culture fixtures in south-western France. The atmosphere is that of an American village fair transplanted into a bishop's garden: period outfits, Brylcreem hairdos, old-school burger stands. It's joyful, colourful and cross-generational — perfect if you love cars as much as music, or if you just come for the vibe. Free entry, free parking.

TGS Springbreak in Labège (31): video games, manga and pop culture near Toulouse

In Labège, south-east of Toulouse, TGS Springbreak offers on June 13 and 14 two days of intensive pop culture devoted to video games, manga, cosplay and Japanese and American cultures. Launched in 2017, this event is the spring edition of the Toulouse Game Show, one of France's largest gaming events. Tournaments, exhibitions, free-play zones, meet-and-greets with streamers and content creators, VR area: the offer is broad and accessible to all ages, from the casual gamer to the seasoned manga fan. It's a good plan for families with children and teenagers looking for something different from classic music festivals. Tickets online.

Fest'Oc Occitan Festival of the Gévaudan in Marvejols (48): Occitan language in celebration

Entirely free, Fest'Oc celebrates Occitan culture on June 12 and 13 in Marvejols, in Lozère, as part of the Région Occitanie's Total Festum programme. Occitan and contemporary music concerts, street shows, traditional dance workshops, language introductions — the programme is dense and family-oriented, driven by a genuine conviction about the vitality of a culture often perceived as purely heritage but still producing very much alive artistic forms. Marvejols, a former medieval city in the heart of the Gévaudan, is in itself a fine destination. On Saturday evening, the midsummer fire extends the celebration. Note: Total Festum, the other Occitan gathering at Place du Soubeyran, takes place at the same time in the same town.

BD à d'Oc in L'Isle-Jourdain (32): comics at the Bell Museum

In a particularly original museum setting — the Musée de l'Art Campanaire, dedicated to bells and percussion instruments — BD à d'Oc brings together authors and comics readers this weekend in L'Isle-Jourdain, in the Gers. The festival invites authors and scriptwriters for signings, talks and exhibitions, with each edition spotlighting a guest of honour whose work is put in the foreground. It's an intimate and accessible proposition, far from the giants of the genre (Angoulême, Paris), that favours direct contact between creators and readers. A chance to go home with signed books and discover works that rarely make the shelves of mainstream bookshops. Ideal for a day out in the Gers with children.

International Sculpture Festival in Montauban (82): the Bourdelle city's squares turned gallery

Through June 14, the International Sculpture Festival in Montauban turns the town's squares and public spaces into an open-air gallery. French and international guest sculptors work in a variety of techniques — contemporary, figurative, abstract, monumental — and their creations occupy Montauban's heritage spaces, the home town of Antoine Bourdelle. Live sculpture demonstrations let you watch artists at work. It's one of the most coherent regional events in this field, in a town with a particular relationship to sculpture rooted in its Bourdelle collections. Open access in public spaces, the perfect pretext for a cultural stroll through Montauban.

Transhumances en Couserans in Seix (09): drive to the summer pastures, Pyrenean festival

On the weekend of June 13 and 14, the village of Seix in Ariège celebrates the Transhumances en Couserans, a pastoral festival marking the drive of herds — sheep, cattle, Mérens horses — up to the mountain summer pastures. The grand animal parade through the village, to the sound of bells and cowbells, is a spectacle in itself. Around this centuries-old tradition, the programme unfolds: producers' market, sheep-dog demonstrations, Couserans music, food on site. It's a gem for anyone who wants to understand what pastoralism still means today in a Pyrenean valley, in an unspoiled natural setting far from major tourist flows. Seix is one hour from Saint-Girons — plan a full day.
