Provence-French Riviera, June 6-7, 2026: opera in Orange, street arts in Gap, cherries in the Luberon

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

Chorégies d'Orange, Couleurs Urbaines in La Seyne, Apt Cherry Fair: eleven very real events from the Vaucluse to the Alps for the weekend of June 6-7.

The first weekend of June marks the real kick-off of the season in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. On June 6 and 7, 2026, the region plays every card at once: grand opera in the Roman Theatre of Orange, blazing reggae in La Seyne-sur-Mer, street arts taking over Gap and Digne, and two cherry fairs heralding the Luberon's gourmet summer. Our take: this weekend doesn't boil down to a single big headliner. From the Vaucluse to the Hautes-Alpes, the richness comes from variety and geography — you can go from antique opera to a cherry orchard in a single day. Here are the eleven events worth the detour, spread across the six departments.

A weekend in every direction, from the Var coast to the Alpine valleys

The strength of this weekend lies in its diversity: classical and lyric music in the Vaucluse, contemporary music in the Var and Hautes-Alpes, live performance in the mountains, contemporary art in the Nice hinterland, terroir gastronomy at the foot of the Luberon. It's exactly the kind of weekend where you choose by mood rather than chasing a single headliner.

Chorégies d'Orange, Orange

Impossible to start anywhere else. The Chorégies d'Orange are one of the oldest and most prestigious lyric festivals in the world, and their 2026 edition runs from May 30 to July 18. This weekend, the Roman Theatre — a 37-metre stage wall, 9,000 open-air seats, a UNESCO World Heritage site — is already in full swing. Watching an opera or a symphonic concert in this two-thousand-year-old setting, as night falls over Orange, remains one of the most striking cultural experiences France can offer. If you were to keep just one regional event for its heritage aura, this would be it. Booking strongly advised, as evenings often sell out.

Festival Couleurs Urbaines, La Seyne-sur-Mer

A complete change of mood with the reggae and dancehall rendezvous of southeastern France. Since 2008, the Festival Couleurs Urbaines has taken over the Cours Toussaint Merle and the Parc de la Navale, facing the Toulon harbour, from June 5 to 7, 2026. Three evenings of reggae, dub, hip-hop and tropical bass, with a line-up that has welcomed over the years heavyweights such as Danakil, Taïro and Clinton Fearon, before more than 3,000 spectators a night. It's the big contemporary-music highlight of the weekend in the Var, with a sweeping sea view as a backdrop. Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 are the final two evenings: aim for them before it closes.

Tous·tes dehors (enfin) !, Gap

Off to the Hautes-Alpes for the street-arts festival of the Théâtre La Passerelle, Gap's national stage. Created in 2013, Tous·tes dehors (enfin) ! takes over the streets, squares and parks of Gap from June 5 to 7 with a family programme blending street theatre, circus, dance, music and visual installations. The idea: to celebrate the return of fine weather by bringing performance out of the venues and down to passers-by level. Much of it is free, ideal for families, and it's one of the highlights of contemporary creation in the mountains. Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 concentrate most of the open-air programming.

Festival Boucan !, Digne-les-Bains

Still in the street-arts register, but in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence this time. Founded in 2022 by the La Chamade association, the Festival Boucan ! turns the centre of Digne-les-Bains into an open-air stage on Saturday June 6. Street-theatre companies, aerial dancers, acrobats, circus artists and musicians fill the space, from the Paul Martin schoolyard to the Cours des Arès. Younger and more modest than its Gap neighbour, this festival bets on closeness and free access, in a spa town well worth discovering. A good pick for anyone after a day of live performance with no booking or budget, in the heart of Haute-Provence.

Festival Littéraire Cœur du Var, Gonfaron

Literature takes over in Gonfaron, in the Var. Free and family-friendly, the Festival Littéraire Cœur du Var gathers around forty authors of general fiction, children's books, manga and comics from June 6. Book signings, round tables, creative workshops for children, readings and read-aloud contests pace this festive weekend in the heart of the village. It's one of the region's rare book events at this time of year, and its eclecticism — from comics to novels by way of manga — makes it a successful outing for all ages. Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 are the liveliest days, signings to the fore.

Fête de la Cerise d'Apt, Apt

On to terroir gastronomy with one of the Vaucluse's flagship food fairs. The Fête de la Cerise d'Apt celebrates the Luberon cherry on June 6 and 7, the king fruit of the Pays d'Apt whose orchards cover the hills of the regional nature park. Producers' markets, tastings of fresh cherries and candied fruit — Apt being the world capital of candied fruit — traditional confectionery demonstrations and family activities fill the pedestrian streets of the centre. It's a distillation of gourmet Provence, perfect for a morning stroll before the heat. Free entry, a village-fair atmosphere and local produce to take home.

Festival de la Cerise et du Terroir, Venasque

Its more confidential cousin takes place on Sunday June 7 in Venasque, a medieval village perched in the Monts de Vaucluse and listed among the most beautiful villages of France. The Festival de la Cerise et du Terroir is led by the Confrérie de la Cerise de Venasque, founded in 1978: tastings, a producers' market, costumed inductions and traditional festivities give the day an authenticity that the bigger fairs have sometimes lost. Free and rooted in local farming history, it's the gourmet gem of the weekend for those who prefer small formats. The setting — stone lanes and views over the Ventoux — does the rest.

Festival de Musique de Toulon et sa Région, Toulon

The region's elder statesman stays on the bill all year round. Founded in 1951, the Festival de Musique de Toulon et sa Région is one of the six oldest classical music festivals in France, alongside Aix-en-Provence, Menton and Prades. Its distinctive feature: a continuous programme, from March to September, bringing classical, lyric and chamber music to the most emblematic heritage venues of Toulon and its conurbation. Check the weekend's bill before deciding, but it's the guarantee of a quality concert in a refined setting, far from the buzz of the big summer festivals. A safe bet for music lovers passing through the Var.

Les Musicales du Luberon, Luberon villages

Still on the classical side, but touring. For more than 36 years, Les Musicales du Luberon have carried leading performers and young talents from Ménerbes to Gordes, from Bonnieux to Bédoin, into chapels, castle courtyards and village squares. The 2026 season runs from May 24 to October 10, making it one of the classical options active this weekend. The appeal lies as much in the venues — the exceptional heritage of the Luberon and the Ventoux — as in the music. It's the ideal complement to a nearby cherry fair: a late-afternoon recital, in a hilltop village, to round off a Provençal weekend in style. Check the calendar for the exact concert on June 6 or 7.

Festival du Peu, Le Broc

For contemporary-art lovers, head to the Nice hinterland. The Festival du Peu takes over the hilltop village of Le Broc, in the Alpes-Maritimes, from May 29 to June 21. About a dozen artists present painting, sculpture, drawing, video, installation, photography and performance along an open-air trail through the village's lanes and squares. Free and open-air, the event turns a medieval town into a gallery to wander freely, with views over the Var valley as a bonus. It's the cultural gem of the weekend for the Alpes-Maritimes, ideal for an arty walk far from the packed beaches of the Riviera. On view this weekend, to explore at your own pace.

Du Silex aux Étoiles, Digne-les-Bains

We end with a singular object: a touring festival of scientific documentary films. Organised by the departmental council of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Du Silex aux Étoiles runs from June 6 to 19 and screens its films in three emblematic sites — the Salagon Museum in Mane, the Astronomy Centre of Saint-Michel-l'Observatoire and the Prehistory Museum of the Verdon gorges. From prehistory to astrophysics, it's an original gateway into science, in venues that are destinations in their own right. A rare offering in the region, starting precisely this weekend: one to note for the curious and for families after an off-the-beaten-track outing.

Wrap-up

Eleven events, six departments, a genuine palette: opera in Orange, reggae in La Seyne, street arts in Gap and Digne, literature in Gonfaron, cherries in Apt and Venasque, classical music in Toulon and the Luberon, contemporary art in Le Broc and scientific cinema in Haute-Provence. Enough to build your weekend by mood, whether you want the great heritage thrill or the confidential village fair. Want to widen your options?
