From the season's first Cinéscénie at Les Épesses to the Grande Marée seaside fête in Saint-Nazaire, eleven Loire-region picks to open summer with stages, gardens and street arts.
What's on in the Pays de la Loire this weekend of June 6 and 7? The first Saturday of June plays its usual role as summer's starting gun: Puy du Fou relights its Cinéscénie, Saint-Nazaire takes over its beach with Grande Marée, and from Maine-et-Loire to the Sarthe the region pulls out all the stops. Our favourites aren't necessarily the biggest names: between a ukulele festival that's one of a kind in France, a soapbox race through the Nantes vineyards and a gardeners' fair in a listed château, the weekend brims with human-scale ideas. Here's the lay of the land, from theatre to jazz by way of the equestrian arts.
La Cinéscénie at Puy du Fou, Les Épesses (85): the season's opening night
Saturday June 6 marks the year's first performance of La Cinéscénie du Puy du Fou, at Les Épesses. Created in 1978 by Philippe de Villiers, it is the largest night-time show in the world: on a 23-hectare stage, 2,400 volunteer actors, the Puyfolais, retrace seven centuries of Vendée history through the sweeping saga of the Maupillier family. Fireworks, water jets, laser projections, video mapping and 360-degree spatial sound carry this outsized spectacle through to September 12. The opening night is traditionally in high demand, so it's wise to book and arrive early, as capacity and site access are managed ahead of time. Worth seeing at least once to grasp the sheer scale of what unfolds in the Vendée countryside.
Festival d'Anjou in Angers (49): France's second-oldest theatre festival
Launched on June 1 and running through the 26th, the Festival d'Anjou is, after Avignon, the oldest theatre festival in the country. Founded in 1950, it stages around twenty classical and contemporary plays each June across heritage venues in Maine-et-Loire: the Plessis-Macé castle, the Grand-Théâtre in Angers, the Dôme in Saumur, the Bouvet Ladubay theatre. This weekend the first performances are on the bill, setting the tone for an edition that mixes big stage names with new work. It's a chance to pair an evening of theatre with the discovery of a monument, in settings you don't get to visit every night. Booking is advised for weekend dates.
Grande Marée in Saint-Nazaire (44): the fête that launches summer on the beach
Born in 2002 at the initiative of Le Théâtre scène nationale and the Les Escales association, Grande Marée is the popular, family fête that opens Saint-Nazaire's summer season. On the first Saturday of June, the 6th, the seafront and Villès-Martin beach turn into an open-air stage: street arts, circus, dance and brass bands take over the coast for a single free day. The mood is deliberately laid-back, designed for drifting from one walkabout act to the next, facing the ocean. It's one of those events where the setting matters as much as the programme, and it's hard to imagine a finer way to open the Atlantic summer. Free entry, bring something to settle on the sand.
Galas du Cadre Noir in Saumur (49): UNESCO-listed equestrian art
In Saumur, the Galas du Cadre Noir continue at the historic Terrefort site, with performances scheduled through October 18. Heir to a tradition born in 1815 and inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, the Cadre Noir presents haute école figures, school jumps and long-rein work in galas choreographed to music. Watching the riders and their mounts move through the great riding hall is as much theatre as it is a display of rare expertise. For anyone passing through the Saumur area this weekend, it's an outing utterly different from the usual stages, best paired with a tour of the town and its troglodyte cellars.
Fête des Jardiniers at Château du Lude (72): one of western France's finest garden events
On Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7, the Fête des Jardiniers fills the gardens of Château du Lude, ranked among the most beautiful in France. Since 1994, this first-weekend-of-June fixture has drawn around a hundred nurserymen, horticulturists and collectors presenting an exceptional botanical range along the banks of the Loir. Expert advice, rare plants, demonstrations and a wander through a remarkable park: the fair speaks to seasoned gardeners and curious strollers alike. It's one of the loveliest ways to spend a June weekend in the green in the Sarthe, with the bonus of a lived-in château whose grounds run down to the river. Tickets at the estate entrance.
Festival Yvr'Art in Yvré-l'Évêque (72): visual arts and a makers' market
On the edge of Le Mans, the Festival Yvr'Art animates the town hall esplanade on June 6 and 7. Free and family-friendly, it celebrates art in all its forms: murals, performances, circus workshops led by Le Mans's Cité du cirque, live performance and a makers' market. Local exhibitors rub shoulders with guest artists in a village atmosphere where you wander freely from a stall to a stage. It's a smart pick for a no-budget weekend, blending artistic discovery with short-circuit craft shopping. Its intimate format makes it an ideal outing for anyone who wants culture without the crowds of the big events.
Festival Fromages, Vins et Musique in Congrier (53): short-circuit produce, celebrated
In southern Mayenne, the Festival Fromages, Vins et Musique brings together around fifteen exhibitors in Congrier on Saturday June 6: cheesemakers, winegrowers, brewers and farm producers run a short-circuit tasting village. The afternoon is given over to wine-tasting workshops and guided tastings, before an evening built around live music. The tone is that of a friendly micro-festival, run since 2017 by local terroir enthusiasts. For lovers of good food and meeting the producers themselves, it's an off-the-beaten-track gourmet break, far from the standardised big fairs. Best approached with an open mind and a glass in hand.
Maine Uke Festival in Saint-Denis-d'Anjou (53): the ukulele gets its own gathering
One of a kind in France, the Maine Uke Festival takes place on June 6 and 7 on the Place des Halles in Saint-Denis-d'Anjou. Created in 2013 by the Véritable Orchestre de Ukulélé de Saint-Denis-d'Anjou, it gathers enthusiasts and international artists of the little instrument for a weekend of concerts, masterclasses, open stage and lutherie exhibitions. The idea charms through its full-on quirkiness: an entire festival devoted to the ukulele, in one of Mayenne's prettiest villages, under a listed covered market. The atmosphere is as warm as the capacity is modest. It's exactly the kind of gem you'd never suspect, well worth the detour whether you strum yourself or come along simply curious.
Festival BAO in Sainte-Gemmes-sur-Loire (49): jazz in the gardens, on the edge of Angers
On the doorstep of Angers, the Festival BAO - Bouche à Oreille runs its jazz programme through June 7 in Sainte-Gemmes-sur-Loire. Run by the JazzMaine association, this Whitsun-weekend event offers open-air concerts in gardens and unusual spots around the town, complemented by indoor dates at the Art-Image hall. The lineup blends jazz and improvised music in an intimate spirit true to its name: here, word of mouth fills the house. For jazz lovers who prefer leafy settings to clubs, the closing Sunday is a good moment to catch the last concerts in the cool of the Loire banks.
Festival des Caisses à Savon Divattaises in Divatte-sur-Loire (44): the slope, the homemade racers and the concerts
Here's the weekend's offbeat gem. The Festival des Caisses à Savon Divattaises takes place on Saturday June 6 at the Perthuis Churin site, in Barbechat. The premise: hurtle down an 800-metre slope in the heart of the Nantes vineyards aboard engineless, entirely homemade vehicles, then roll straight into an evening of concerts. Created in 2022, the event draws a crowd won over each year by the mix of inventive tinkering, good-natured adrenaline and village revelry. It's free, it's family-friendly, and the show is as much in the stands as on the track. An outing that genuinely stands out and will delight fans of left-field atmospheres.
Festival Photo à Ciel Ouvert in L'Île-d'Olonne (85): large-format photography across the marshes
On the Vendée coast, the Festival Photo à Ciel Ouvert turns the village and salt marshes of L'Île-d'Olonne into an open-air gallery, through November 1. This weekend the 1.5-kilometre trail is in place: large-format photographs installed on low walls, façades and the paths leading to the marshes. Organised by the L'OEil association and its volunteers, the event is entirely free and explored on foot, at walking pace. It's a fine alternative to the weekend's musical stages, pairing the discovery of images with the exploration of a marsh landscape that's stunning in early summer. Combine it with an end of day over towards nearby Les Sables-d'Olonne.
Worth a mention too
- Les Pestaculaires in Montaigu-Vendée (85): this multidisciplinary, eco-minded family festival wraps its edition on Saturday June 6 at Parc Henri Joyaux, with street shows, circus, storytelling and music in a green setting. Free.
