From Talant's medieval fair to the launch of the Royal Saltworks Garden Festival, eleven picks for a weekend split between heritage, street arts and local flavour.
What's on in Burgundy-Franche-Comté this weekend of June 6 and 7? The season of big open-air events is getting under way, and our pick goes to an underrated UNESCO site: the Royal Saltworks Garden Festival at Arc-et-Senans, opening on Sunday June 7. Elsewhere, the weekend leans into living heritage, from the medieval fair of Talant above Dijon to the street arts of Pontarlier, with Franche-Comté rock thrown in at Valentigney. And between foodie Yonne and the ceramic-making Charolais, the local-flavour gems are plentiful.
Royal Saltworks Garden Festival in Arc-et-Senans (25): nine ephemeral gardens beneath Ledoux's arches
The Festival des Jardins de la Saline Royale opens its new season on Sunday June 7 and runs through October 18. Since 2001, this garden showcase, unique in Europe, has taken place inside Claude-Nicolas Ledoux's monument, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each edition sees nine 400 m² gardens created by landscape students from France, Belgium and Switzerland, under head gardener Denis Duquet. The opening weekend is the right moment to see the compositions still fresh, before the full summer bloom. Pair it with a tour of the saltworks' semicircular architecture, whose 18th-century ideal-city design is worth the trip on its own. Self-guided route.
Talant Goes Medieval (21): the age of the Dukes on the heights above Dijon
On the heights overlooking Dijon, Talant à l'Heure Médiévale takes the town back to the time of the Dukes of Burgundy on Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7. The historic centre of this former ducal stronghold turns into a period camp and market: craft workshops, combat displays, shows, exhibitions and medieval cooking fill the two days. The event spotlights heritage often overshadowed by the nearby Burgundian capital, even though it offers one of the finest viewpoints over the Dijon area. Great for families, in a costumed atmosphere that speaks to children and history buffs alike. Walk up to the church of Notre-Dame de Talant, the landmark of the medieval town.
BockSons Festi'Val in Valentigney (25): rock, punk and metal on the Longines site
The BockSons Festi'Val wraps its two days of concerts on Saturday June 6, on the Longines site in Valentigney. Created in 2018 by the Unis Vers Val association, this rock, punk and metal event gathers more than 5,000 festival-goers around two stages mixing national and international acts. Its trademark: a proudly Franche-Comté footprint, with local brewers and food trucks serving regional specialities. The final night traditionally holds the densest lineup. A good bet for fans of human-scale heavy music in the Pays de Montbéliard, far from the big summer machines. Consider car-sharing, as the site fills up fast in the evening.
Green Days in Montbéliard (25): human ecology takes to the streets
From June 6 to 9, Green Days takes over the streets, parks and squares of Montbéliard for four days of free open-air shows. Created in 2013 by MA scène nationale of the Pays de Montbéliard, this multidisciplinary festival brings together musicians, dancers, circus artists, visual artists and actors around the idea of "human ecology", which questions the link between people and their environment. The opening weekend kicks off the programme with its first walkabouts and performances. It's a demanding yet accessible offering, best discovered on a stroll through central Montbéliard. Free and family-friendly, ideal for stumbling upon art forms you wouldn't necessarily seek out indoors.
Festival Pont des Arts in Pontarlier (25): street arts in the Haut-Doubs
The Festival Pont des Arts opens its nine days on Saturday June 6, on Place d'Arçon and across central Pontarlier. Created in 2012 by the La Sarbacane association, this street-arts gathering turns the capital of the Haut-Doubs into an open-air stage: street theatre companies, circus performers, musicians and dancers take over the streets, squares and even shop windows. At once popular and ambitious, the festival relies on closeness to the audience and on keeping much of the programme free. The launch weekend sets the tone, in an upland town where the crisp June air makes outdoor shows especially pleasant.
Transju'Trail in Lamoura and Les Rousses (39): the king of trails in the Jura Mountains
The Transju'Trail rolls out its courses on Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7 between Lamoura, Les Rousses, Morbier and Prémanon, in the Haut-Jura. The summer counterpart of the legendary Transjurassienne cross-country ski race, this trail-running event offers distances for every level on upland paths with sweeping views over the Franco-Swiss ridges. Beyond the race, it's a popular celebration that animates the whole Les Rousses area, with its finish village, aid stations and crowds. Whether you run or come to cheer, it's a chance to get up high in one of the East's finest forest ranges. Bring warm clothing: the altitude soon reminds spectators it's there.
Les Petites Rêveries in Brinon-sur-Beuvron (58): living arts transform a Nièvre village
From June 5 to 7, Les Petites Rêveries turn the village of Brinon-sur-Beuvron into an open-air theatre. For more than twenty years, this festival has offered around fifteen free "small forms" scattered through the gardens, barns and wash-houses of the village, alongside larger shows under a 500-seat big top. Circus, theatre, chanson, comedy and dance draw more than 12,000 admissions, powered by a hundred and sixty volunteers. The weekend is the heart of the event. It's a rural gem proving a small Nièvre village can host a programme as dense as it is convivial. Best experienced by wandering, as shows pop up around every corner.
Fayencez-vous! across the Grand Charolais (71): ceramics celebrated from Digoin to Charolles
From June 4 to 7, Fayencez-vous! celebrates the ceramic heritage of the Grand Charolais, from Digoin to Charolles via Paray-le-Monial. This roving festival offers manufactory tours, all-ceramic flea markets, talks, offbeat guided visits and "faïençailles" banquets. Collectors, lovers of old and modern faience and the simply curious gather for a long weekend devoted to local know-how. It's a rare chance to step inside workshops usually closed to the public, in a region where faience shaped both the economy and the identity. Sunday, the closing day, concentrates much of the public programming.
Journées Châtillonnaises in Châtillon-sur-Seine (21): the great fair of the Pays Châtillonnais
The Journées Châtillonnaises take over the Esplanade du Cours l'Abbé on Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7, as on every first weekend of June for more than twenty-five years. This large open-air fair celebrates the craft and farming know-how of northern Côte-d'Or: more than 120 exhibitors, 200 animals and 10,000 m² of space bring together farmers, artisans and families around contests, demonstrations and food stalls. It's the identity event of the Pays Châtillonnais, halfway between an agricultural show and a popular fête. Pair it with the Pays Châtillonnais museum, home to the famous Vix treasure and its monumental krater. A warm, family-friendly affair.
Cherry Festival in Coulanges-la-Vineuse (89): foodie flavour in wine country
On Sunday June 7, the Fête de la Cerise brings the wine village of Coulanges-la-Vineuse to life, a labelled Cité de Caractère on the slopes south of Auxerre. Cherry growers, winemakers and local artisans gather for a day of tasting, picking and sharing: stalls of fresh cherries, processed products and local wines make up this convivial, popular event. It's a lovely Sunday outing in June, when the cherry orchards and vineyards answer each other across the Yonne landscape. It's also a chance to discover a Burgundy vineyard quieter than the Côte de Beaune, and far kinder on the wallet.
Craft Beer'n Geek in Joigny (89): craft beer and pop culture under one roof
On Sunday June 7, Craft Beer'n Geek blends the world of craft beer with geek culture across more than 1,300 m², on Quai du 1er Dragons in Joigny. Local and regional brewers rub shoulders with exhibitors specialising in video games, manga, figurines, retro toys, steampunk and collectible cards, punctuated by contests and blind tastings. It's a friendly, offbeat fair, a counterpoint to the weekend's heritage events, and a genuine good plan for families and pop-culture fans in the Yonne. Tasting in moderation, of course, but the easy-going mood and the variety of stalls make it an original outing by the Yonne river.
