About Afrikabidon

Afrikabidon was a festival dedicated to African culture, born in 2007 at the Aven Marzal tourist site in Saint-Remèze, Ardèche. For nearly a month between mid-July and mid-August, the festival offered concerts, conferences, workshops, and an African market in an exceptional natural setting. With artists like Amadou et Mariam or Dobet Gnahoré and personalities like the philosopher-agronomist Pierre Rabhi, Afrikabidon had managed to create a bridge between Africa and Ardèche, attracting a large audience from its very first edition. The event is no longer organized: the last publicly documented edition dates back to 2010.

Africa at the Heart of Ardèche

Afrikabidon was a unique festival, born from the desire to showcase the richness and diversity of African culture in the setting of southern Ardèche. Created in 2007 by the Point Afrique association, the festival took up residence at the Aven Marzal tourist site in Saint-Remèze, a place steeped in history in the heart of the Gras plateau.

A Rich and Eclectic Program

The festival offered an ambitious program spanning nearly a month, from mid-July to mid-August:

  • Concerts by internationally renowned African artists: Amadou et Mariam, Dobet Gnahoré, Tabala Orkestra
  • "Crossed perspectives" conferences with personalities such as the philosopher-agronomist Pierre Rabhi and the geographer Sylvie Brunel
  • Workshops and courses to discover African know-how: percussion, dance, cooking, calligraphy
  • An African market offering crafts, gastronomy, and products from the continent

A Festival Between Land and Humanity

Afrikabidon stood out for its humanist and solidarity dimension. Beyond the cultural program, the festival carried a message of encounter, exchange, and mutual understanding between peoples. The "crossed perspectives" conferences brought together intellectuals, artists, and association leaders to debate the issues facing the African continent.

The End of an Adventure

Supported by the Point Afrique association, specialized in solidarity tourism, the festival had experienced real popular enthusiasm in its early days in southern Ardèche. But after the summer 2010 edition, no public trace of a new edition could be found: Afrikabidon appears to have been discontinued since. The Aven Marzal site, with its caves and museum, remains open to visitors all year round.
