Open-air theatre performances under the stars at the Château de Grignan
Since 1987, the Fêtes Nocturnes du Château de Grignan have offered two months of open-air theatre performances every summer, with the majestic facade of the Renaissance castle as a backdrop. Inspired by the grand festivals held by the Count of Grignan in his Provençal castle, these performances under the stars feature the great classics of the French and European repertoire in an exceptional setting. Since 2004, the festival has taken its current form with a major theatrical production each summer, attracting thousands of spectators from all over France.
Since 1987, the Fêtes Nocturnes du Château de Grignan have offered a unique theatrical spectacle every summer. The Renaissance facade of the castle, a listed historic monument, serves as a grand natural backdrop for open-air performances that take place at dusk, under the stars of the Drôme provençale.
The Fêtes Nocturnes were born in 1987, inspired by the grand festivals held by the Count of Grignan in his Provençal castle. Originally, the festival offered walking tours through the castle, punctuated by theatrical scenes and musical sketches. In 2004, the festival took its current form with a major theatrical production presented each summer on the castle terrace.
Each year, an original staging of a great classic from the repertoire is created for the unique setting of the castle. In 2024, it was Le Cid by Corneille that was presented. In 2025, The Barber of Seville by Beaumarchais, directed by Jean-Philippe Daguerre, transformed the castle into a colorful Spain with a troupe of 9 actor-musicians in a resolutely musical performance with flamboyant costumes and scenography. In 2026, it will be The School for Wives by Molière, directed by Robin Renucci, that will be on display.
The Château de Grignan is one of the largest Renaissance castles in southeastern France. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village of Grignan and the Tricastin plain, it offers a spectacular panorama of the Provençal Drôme landscape. The performances take place on the south terrace of the castle, facing the monumental facade, in a magical atmosphere where theatrical art and architectural heritage combine.
The Fêtes Nocturnes run from late June to late August, with performances several evenings a week at 9 PM. The show lasts about two hours and is performed outdoors, in all weather (except exceptional meteorological conditions). The audience sits on tiered seating facing the castle facade.
The Fêtes Nocturnes are organized by the Châteaux de la Drôme, an establishment of the Department of Drôme which manages the Château de Grignan, the Château de Suze-la-Rousse, and the Château des Adhémar in Montélimar. This festival is the department's flagship cultural event, attracting thousands of spectators from all over France and abroad each summer.
The 2026 edition of the Fêtes Nocturnes will present The School for Wives by Molière, directed by Robin Renucci, at the Château de Grignan.
