Open-air theatre performances under the stars at the Château de Grignan
Since 1987, the Fêtes Nocturnes du Château de Grignan have offered nearly two months of open-air theatre performances each summer, with the majestic facade of the Renaissance castle as a backdrop. Inspired by the grand festivities hosted by the Count of Grignan in his Provençal castle, these performances under the stars stage great classics of the French and European repertoire in an exceptional setting. Since 2004, the festival has taken its current form with a major theatrical production each summer, attracting tens of thousands of spectators from all over France — over 34,000 during the record-breaking 2025 edition.
Since 1987, the Fêtes Nocturnes du Château de Grignan have offered a unique theatrical spectacle each summer. The Renaissance facade of the castle, classified as a historical monument, serves as a natural and magnificent backdrop for open-air performances that take place at dusk, under the stars of the Drôme provençale. Approximately 772 spectators take their seats each evening on the stands installed facing the castle facade.
The Fêtes Nocturnes were born in 1987, inspired by the grand festivities hosted by the Count of Grignan in his Provençal castle. Originally, the festival offered ambulatory tours through the castle, punctuated by theatrical skits and musical sketches. In 2004, the festival took its current form with a major theatrical production presented each summer on the castle terrace. Since then, 14 plays by Molière have been performed there.
Each year, an original staging of a great classic from the repertoire is created for the unique setting of the castle. In 2024, Le Cid by Corneille was presented. In 2025, Le Barbier de Séville by Beaumarchais, directed by Jean-Philippe Daguerre, transformed the castle into a colourful Spain with a troupe of 9 actor-musicians — a record-breaking edition with over 34,000 spectators. In 2026, L'École des femmes by Molière, directed by Robin Renucci (director of La Criée — Théâtre National de Marseille), with François Morel in the role of Arnolphe, is on the bill for this 39th edition.
The Château de Grignan is one of the largest Renaissance castles in southeastern France. Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the village of Grignan and the Tricastin plain, it offers a spectacular panorama of the Drôme provençale landscapes. Performances take place on the castle's south terrace, facing the monumental facade, in a magical atmosphere where theatrical art and architectural heritage combine.
The Fêtes Nocturnes run from late June to late August, with performances from Monday to Saturday at 9 PM. The show lasts approximately two hours and is performed outdoors, in all weather (except exceptional meteorological conditions). The audience is seated on stands installed facing the castle facade. The Café Louis-Provence, an on-site catering area, offers local products on performance evenings.
The Fêtes Nocturnes are organised by the Châteaux de la Drôme, an establishment of the Département de la Drôme which manages the Château de Grignan, the Château de Suze-la-Rousse, and the Château des Adhémar in Montélimar. This festival is the department's flagship cultural event, attracting tens of thousands of spectators from all over France and abroad each summer.
The 39th edition of the Fêtes Nocturnes du Château de Grignan presents L'École des femmes (The School for Wives) by Molière, directed by Robin Renucci (director of La Criée — Théâtre National de Marseille), with François Morel in the role of Arnolphe. 46 performances from June 24 to August 22, 2026. This edition is part of the quadricentennial of the birth of Madame de Sévigné.
For summer 2026, the Fêtes Nocturnes du Château de Grignan present The School for Wives by Molière, directed by Robin Renucci, director of La Criée — Théâtre National de Marseille. This 39th edition is part of the quadricentennial of the birth of Madame de Sévigné, exploring themes of freedom, emancipation, and the female condition in the Marquise's century.
Robin Renucci, a committed actor and director, offers a contemporary reading of Molière's text, faithful to the power of classical verse and aimed at today's audience. The staging fully utilizes the architecture of the Château de Grignan, exploiting the perspectives, heights, and mineral power of the site, playing on the contrasts between confinement and openness, authority and desire, social order and youthful vitality. The scenography depicts Arnolphe's house as a wooden structure that degrades as his project of domination collapses.
François Morel plays the main role of Arnolphe, surrounded by Juliette Cahon, François Deblock, Luc-Antoine Diquéro, Sven Narbonne, Chani Sabaty, and Igor Skreblin. The scenography is by Lisa Navarro, lighting by Sarah Marcotte, costumes by Benjamin Moreau, and sound design by Antoine Richard.
46 performances are scheduled from June 24 to August 22, 2026, Monday to Saturday at 9 PM. The show lasts approximately 2 hours. Around 772 seats are available each evening. Two audio-described sessions are planned for July 22 and August 11, 2026 for visually impaired spectators.
