Classical music festival and summer music academy in Vercors
Created in 1997, the Musiques en Vercors festival is a summer event for classical music that unfolds in the villages of the Vercors massif, between Drôme and Isère. Supported by the association Musique en Vercors, the festival offers two weeks in August of chamber music concerts, recitals, and orchestras in remarkable heritage sites, notably the Abbey of Léoncel. It is associated with the Académie Musicale d'Été, which hosts young musicians from around the world for masterclasses and public concerts.
Since 1997, the Musiques en Vercors festival has been resonating classical music in the villages of the Vercors massif, between Drôme and Isère. This touring festival, supported by the Musique en Vercors association, offers each summer a program of chamber music concerts, recitals, and orchestral performances in exceptional heritage sites: Romanesque churches, abbeys, chapels, and village halls.
Among the emblematic venues of the festival, the Cistercian Abbey of Léoncel, founded in 1137, holds a special place. Its abbey church, a listed historic monument, offers remarkable acoustics for chamber music concerts. Every Sunday in July and August, a concert is held there, making this site a strong anchor point for the festival in the Drôme.
The festival is inseparable from the Académie Musicale d'Été, which annually hosts young musicians from around the world for masterclasses taught by internationally renowned artists. The students perform in public concerts integrated into the festival's program, thus offering an exceptional showcase for young classical music talents.
Musiques en Vercors is distinguished by its touring nature: concerts move from village to village, from Villard-de-Lans to Léoncel, including Corrençon-en-Vercors, Lans-en-Vercors, and other towns in the massif. This touring allows spectators to discover the architectural and natural heritage of Vercors while enjoying a high-quality musical program.
The festival's program covers a wide repertoire, from baroque to contemporary, with a particular focus on chamber music. String quartets, piano trios, sonatas, concertos, and contemporary creations follow one another in various formats—intimate concerts in chapels, recitals in abbeys, orchestral performances in concert halls—offering a unique atmosphere each evening.
With its thirty editions in 2026 and its reputation for excellence, Musiques en Vercors stands out as one of the most endearing classical music festivals in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, combining artistic rigor, beautiful landscapes, and mountain conviviality.
The 30th edition of the Musiques en Vercors festival will be held from August 6 to 20, 2026, in the Vercors villages. The 36th Académie Musicale d'Été will take place from August 9 to 20. Two pre-season concerts on June 5 and 6 at the Verrière du Château de Villard-de-Lans.
