The African gospel festival of Bagnolet
The Afro Paris Gospel Festival brings together the great voices of African and African-American gospel music in Bagnolet every year. Supported by evangelical associations and choirs from Seine-Saint-Denis, this unique event in Île-de-France celebrates the spirituality, joy, and musical power of gospel in all its stylistic diversity, from afro-gospel to contemporary gospel and spirituals.
Nestled in the heart of Bagnolet (Seine-Saint-Denis), the Afro Paris Gospel Festival is a unique celebration of African and Afro-diasporic gospel music. This festival brings together choirs, soloists, and groups from the evangelical and charismatic communities of Île-de-France and sub-Saharan Africa to offer the public performances of incomparable vocal and spiritual intensity.
Seine-Saint-Denis is home to one of the largest concentrations of African communities in Europe. It is in this fertile ground that the Afro Paris Gospel Festival has taken root, supported by cultural and religious associations that keep alive the tradition of gospel adapted to the musical influences of Central and West Africa. Congolese, Ivorian, Cameroonian, and Senegalese choirs mingle with African-American ensembles to create an intense and moving musical dialogue.
Beyond the concerts, the Afro Paris Gospel Festival offers choral singing workshops, master classes led by renowned choirmasters, as well as moments of exchange and sharing between artists and the public. The program explores all facets of African gospel: contemporary afro-gospel, negro spiritual, traditional gospel, praise and worship, and even fusions with zouk, coupé-décalé, or Congolese rumba.
Bagnolet, a commune bordering Paris in the 93 department, is a territory of intense cultural mixing. Its proximity to the capital and the density of its associative life make it an ideal ground for hosting an event that transcends musical and cultural borders. The festival contributes to the artistic influence of the city and the promotion of African cultures in the public space.
Rooted in the great traditions of African-American sacred music, gospel has undergone an extraordinary transformation in Africa and the diaspora since the 1980s. Driven by powerful voices and sophisticated arrangements blending African percussion, brass, and modern synthesizers, afro-gospel is today one of the most dynamic and popular musical genres on the continent. The Afro Paris Gospel Festival helps to make this richness known and recognized by the general French public.
The Afro Paris Gospel Festival 2026 will welcome back its Bagnolet audience for a new edition celebrating the richness of African gospel, with choirs, soloists, and workshops open to all.
The Afro Paris Gospel Festival returns to Bagnolet for a new edition that promises to be as moving as the previous ones. The program, to be unveiled gradually, will bring together the best choirs and soloists of African gospel from the Île-de-France diaspora.
