The guinguette spirit resurrected every Sunday in summer on the banks of the Marne
Les Dimanches au Bord de l'Eau in Nogent-sur-Marne revive the spirit of 19th-century guinguettes. Every Sunday in summer, from June to August, the Port of Nogent comes alive with dances, dance initiations, jazz and musette concerts, tastings, and children's games. An unmissable event for lovers of the Marne and popular Parisian traditions.
Nogent-sur-Marne is one of the emblematic towns of the Marne and the tradition of Parisian guinguettes. Since the 19th century, the banks of the Marne have been the scene of popular festivities that have inspired painters, songwriters, and writers. Every Sunday in summer, the town brings this precious heritage back to life through Les Dimanches au Bord de l'Eau.
Guinguettes were born in the 19th century on the banks of the Marne, taking advantage of the fact that wines sold outside Paris were not subject to the same taxes as in the city. Open-air establishments flourished on the banks, where Parisians and suburbanites came to dance, eat, and enjoy the fresh air and exceptional natural setting.
Artists such as Renoir, Monet, and Sisley immortalized these places of conviviality and joy. Guinguettes have inspired generations of singer-songwriters and are an integral part of French cultural heritage. Nogent-sur-Marne has established itself as one of the capitals of this tradition, with emblematic establishments that have stood the test of time.
Every Sunday from June to the end of August, from 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM, the Port of Nogent hosts Les Dimanches au Bord de l'Eau:
The Port of Nogent offers a dream setting for these Sunday festivities. The banks of the Marne, lined with century-old trees, offer a bucolic and soothing panorama, contrasting with the hustle and bustle of the city. Access is facilitated by the pedestrian footbridge of the Pont de Nogent and by the Passeur de Rives, a river shuttle service.
Nautical enthusiasts will also appreciate the many activities offered on the Marne: canoeing, rowing, boat trips. The town of Nogent-sur-Marne indeed has top-tier nautical facilities, with a river sports tradition dating back to the 19th century.
One of the unique features of Les Dimanches au Bord de l'Eau is the possibility of arriving by boat-bus. Paris Est Marne et Bois offers two boat routes in summer from Joinville-le-Pont to the port of Nogent, and from the Pont de Bry to the RER station of Neuilly-Plaisance. A poetic and original way to reach the festivities, in the spirit of the river outings of yesteryear.
