Medieval festival with theatrical tours and storytelling evenings in the fortress of the Dukes of Bourbon
Each year during the Ascension weekend, the majestic ruins of Hérisson Castle, in the Allier region, relive the excitement of their medieval past. This former stronghold of the Dukes of Bourbon, built as early as the 11th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking a bend in the Aumance river, was one of the seventeen strategic fortresses of Bourbonnais. Its impressive remains, with the remnants of twenty-two towers and a fortified enclosure, offer an exceptional setting for this lively and accessible medieval festival.
The event is driven by the company Les Rétamés, a young theater collective founded in 2023 and based in an old mill in the village of Hérisson. Composed of three actor-creators, Max Benguigui, Lola Marchais, and Zina-Lucia Meziat, accompanied by performer Ruby Schiels, the company takes over the castle ruins for theatrical tours where history blends with humor and improvisation. Visitors are guided through the fortress's remains by colorful characters who bring the site's anecdotes and legends to life.
The Chevaliers d'Allen, an association for ancient fencing and theatrical combat based in Moulins, complete the program with choreographed sword fight demonstrations and spectacular sketches. A medieval village comes to life in the fortress courtyard with period artisans and activities. The storytelling evening, a special moment of the event, brings together young and old at dusk for tales of knights, witches, and fantastic creatures, in the enchanting atmosphere of the ruins lit by torchlight.
Ascension at Hérisson Castle contributes to the enhancement of this remarkable heritage in the north of the Allier region. The medieval village of Hérisson, recognized for its picturesque character, offers a setting of ancient streets and half-timbered houses at the foot of the fortress. The event invites visitors to discover this listed site, while also offering on-site catering with food trucks and a refreshment stand. Theatrical guided tours are scheduled at fixed times throughout the day, allowing everyone to fully enjoy this medieval immersion in the heart of Bourbonnais.
Ascension at Hérisson Castle returns from May 15th to 17th, 2026, during the extended Ascension weekend, for a third edition of this medieval festival in the ruins of the Dukes of Bourbon's fortress.
The company Les Rétamés and the Chevaliers d'Allen will once again take over the castle ruins to offer theatrical tours, choreographed sword fights, comic sketches, and a storytelling evening. The medieval village and on-site catering will complete this immersion into the Middle Ages. The detailed program will be announced in spring 2026.
