About Braderie de Lille

The Braderie de Lille is Europe's largest flea market. Every first weekend of September, the city welcomes 2.5 million visitors and hosts 51 km of stalls throughout the city center: locals selling goods from their doorsteps, professional antique dealers on the grand boulevards, and dedicated areas for community groups and upcycling. Over the weekend, 500 tons of mussels and 30 tons of fries are served, with shells piling up in mounds outside restaurants.

Braderie de Lille — edition 2026

The 2026 Braderie de Lille takes place from Saturday, September 5th, to Sunday, September 6th, running non-stop for 34 hours from 8:00 AM Saturday until 6:00 PM Sunday. Professional antique dealers and flea market vendors set up along the main thoroughfares of Boulevards Louis XIV and de la Liberté, Avenue du Président-Kennedy, and the Esplanade, while local residents sell items right in front of their homes. The city center is closed to all vehicle traffic from 7:00 PM on Friday, September 4th, until 1:00 AM on Monday, September 7th. Highlights include the children's flea market at Gare Saint-Sauveur, a bicycle flea market in Wazemmes, a reuse village at Place de la République, a funfair on the Champ de Mars, and 500 tons of mussels served throughout the weekend.

Braderie de Lille 2026: September 5th and 6th

The City of Lille has confirmed the dates for the 2026 edition: from Saturday, September 5th at 8:00 AM to Sunday, September 6th at 6:00 PM, totaling 34 hours of non-stop activity. Booking a stall is mandatory for all sellers and was available from June 11th to August 18th via reservation-braderie.lille.fr, the only official booking site.

The Perimeter

The event is concentrated in the Lille-Centre and Vieux-Lille districts, with an extension into Wazemmes (Rue Léon Gambetta and Place de la Nouvelle Aventure). Antique dealers and professional vendors form a main shopping axis along Boulevards Louis XIV and de la Liberté, Avenue du Président-Kennedy, adjacent streets, and along the Esplanade. Residents of authorized streets sell items in front of their homes; those living in streets removed from the perimeter since 2017 are given priority for free stalls in designated areas.

What's New in 2026

Mayor Arnaud Deslandes detailed the changes for this year's edition in an interview published on July 21, 2026. Certain streets in Vieux-Lille may be temporarily closed if they become too congested, specifically Rue Esquermoise, Rue Basse, and Rue Lepelletier. Following coordination with the fire department (Sdis) and national police, the Rue des Trois-Mollettes is now open for stalls on its odd-numbered side. Amplified music is permitted until 2:00 AM, with the Masséna-Solférino sectors maintaining their role as the primary party zones.

The 2026 Poster

The City has chosen local comedian Thomas Deseur as the face of this year's event. The official poster is sold for €5, with proceeds benefiting the charity Les Clowns de l'Espoir, available at the Hello Lille Destination stand on Place du Théâtre and at the Palais Rihour throughout the Braderie, or for €8 online including a protective tube (€3 for the tube at physical locations).

City Statistics

The City reports 2.5 million visitors, over 5,200 exhibitors in 2025, 51 km of stalls, 500 tons of mussels, 30 tons of fries, and 361 tons of waste collected by municipal staff. Mussel shells are collected and recycled; those from 2024 were used to create ten benches installed on the forecourt of the City Hall in the summer of 2025. The sale of new products has been prohibited since 2017, except for established local shopkeepers selling goods related to their usual business.

Practical information

Practical information — Braderie de Lille

Dates and times

The Braderie de Lille takes place every year on the first weekend of September, from Saturday at 8:00 AM to Sunday at 6:00 PM, totaling 34 hours of non-stop activity. Visitors can enter and move freely on foot throughout the perimeter during these 34 hours. A notable exception: in 2024, the event was moved to September 14th and 15th due to the Paris Olympic Games.

The perimeter

The event is concentrated in the Lille-Centre and Vieux-Lille districts, with an extension to Wazemmes (rue Léon Gambetta and place de la Nouvelle Aventure). Antique dealers and flea market vendors form the main "treasure hunting" axis along the boulevards Louis XIV and de la Liberté, avenue du Président-Kennedy, and along the Esplanade.

Getting there

By train: The Lille-Flandres station (TER and TGV from Paris) and Lille-Europe station (Eurostar to London and Brussels, TGV to Roissy and major French cities) are just 400 meters apart in the city center. SNCF increases service during the Braderie, with extra TER trains and special event fares available at ter.sncf.com/hauts-de-france. Book in advance, as trains are very crowded that weekend.

By metro and tram: The ilévia network runs non-stop on Saturday and extends service on Friday and Sunday nights. Several bus lines are diverted or suspended, and no buses enter the Braderie perimeter. Check ilevia.fr before you leave.

By car: Access to the center is prohibited for all vehicles from Friday evening until early Monday morning. Park in the park-and-ride lots on the outskirts, which remain open continuously over the weekend for ilévia and TER customers with a validated daily ticket, then take the metro or tram into the center. City center parking garages are closed, and vehicles parked illegally within the perimeter will be fined and towed.

By bike: V'Lille stations within the perimeter are closed; those outside remain accessible. A secure, guarded enclosure is set up on the square of the Maison des Mobilités Durables, place François Mitterrand, between the two stations.

Tips for treasure hunters

  • Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes: you will be walking a lot and for a long time.
  • Be patient: with two million visitors, the streets are often crowded.
  • Keep an eye on children, and if possible, avoid strollers, which make navigating the crowds very difficult.
  • Bring cash: few sellers accept credit cards.
  • Bring a bag suitable for your purchases. For furniture and bulky items, merchants often agree to later delivery.
  • Bring a list of what you are looking for and cross-reference it with the official map to target the right streets.
  • The end of the Braderie is the best time to negotiate: sellers prefer to leave with less to carry.

On-site

Glass bottles and alcohol consumption are prohibited in public spaces within the perimeter, and the sale of takeaway alcohol is not allowed. First aid stations, extra toilets, drinking water points, a lost children's center, and a "Safe Zone" are distributed along the route and marked on the official map published by the city.

A fair born in the Middle Ages

The origins of the Braderie de Lille date back to the 12th century. The city traces its first written record to a 15th-century text, where it was referred to as a "franche foire"—an annual event that allowed visiting merchants to sell their goods tax-free after the Assumption, on what is now the Grand-Place. By the 14th century, its duration had been reduced from thirty to fifteen days.

The word "braderie" likely comes from the Dutch braaden, meaning to roast: servants, who were permitted to resell their masters' old belongings, would set up shop next to poultry and herring vendors who roasted their wares on the spot. The name of the festival is thought to have evolved from braderij, meaning roasters. By the 19th century, workers would gather in the streets to buy and sell second-hand goods, enjoy a drink, and ride the carousels.

Europe's largest flea market

Today, the Braderie features 51 km of stalls across the center of Lille, according to city figures, attracting 2.5 million visitors from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, and Germany, with over 5,200 exhibitors in 2025. Private individuals and professional antique dealers set up side by side. Since 2017, the sale of new products has been prohibited, except for established local shopkeepers selling their usual stock: the city promotes the Braderie as the largest showcase for the circular economy.

Mussels and fries

500 tons of mussels and 30 tons of fries are consumed over the weekend. Mussels reportedly appeared at the Braderie as early as the 15th century, replacing the roast chicken traditionally sold there. Until the 1970s, Lille restaurateurs would attract customers using the same wooden rattles as the traveling mussel sellers. The shells are piled up in heaps outside establishments throughout the weekend before being collected and recycled: the shells from 2024 were used to create ten benches installed on the square in front of the City Hall in the summer of 2025.

A giant pedestrian zone

For one weekend, the center of Lille is closed to all motorized vehicles and returned to pedestrians. From the children's Braderie at the Gare Saint-Sauveur and the bicycle flea market in Wazemmes to the community and upcycling villages and the funfair on the Esplanade du Champ de Mars, activities are spread across the neighborhoods, and terraces stay open late into the night.
