The Lille Christmas Market: A Magical Event in the Heart of the City
Every year, from mid-November, the Rihour Square is adorned with its finest decorations to host the Lille Christmas Village. Organized by the Lille Commerce Federation, this event has become over the decades one of the largest Christmas markets in northern France, rivaling those of Strasbourg or Colmar.
An Enchanted Village of 90 Chalets
Under the sparkling illuminations, 90 wooden chalets line Rihour Square, offering an incredible variety of products: regional and international crafts, Christmas decorations, traditional toys, delicacies (gingerbread, chocolates, nougats, sweets), mulled wine, Christmas beers, and gastronomic specialties from the North. The exhibitors are selected for the quality and originality of their products.
Activities and Shows
The Lille Christmas Market is not just about its chalets. Throughout the period, numerous activities enchant young and old alike:
- The Ferris Wheel: located on the Grand'Place, it offers a panoramic view of the illuminated city.
- Children's Workshops: every Wednesday afternoon, creative workshops are offered to the youngest.
- Light and Musical Parades: every Friday evening, magical processions cross the market.
- Musical Blind Tests: every Friday at 5 PM, a festive atmosphere is guaranteed.
- Traveling Shows: on Fridays from 6 PM to 8 PM, artists and performers entertain the aisles.
A Tradition Rooted in Lille's Heritage
The Lille Christmas Market is part of a long tradition of winter festivities. The entire city embraces the Christmas spirit: illuminations in the shopping streets, giant Christmas trees, animated shop windows of department stores, and cultural events in museums and performance venues. The market is the central point of this effervescence, a meeting place where Lille families and visitors come to find the magic of Christmas.
An Eco-Responsible Event
Conscious of its environmental impact, the market is gradually committing to an eco-responsible approach: waste reduction, promotion of short supply chains, presence of local producers, and use of low-consumption LED lighting for illuminations.

Access and Transport
By Metro: "Rihour" station, line 1 (direction CHU-Eurasanté from Lille Flandres). The market is located immediately outside the station.
By Train: From Lille Flandres station, a 5-minute walk via Rue Faidherbe and Grand'Place.
By Car: Grand'Place and Rihour underground parking lots are in the immediate vicinity. Prefer public transport due to crowds.
By V'Lille: Stations available around Rihour Square.
Opening Hours
Sunday to Thursday: 11 AM - 8:30 PM. Friday and Saturday: 11 AM - 10 PM. Closed on December 25th. Special hours on December 24th and 31st (early closing).
Prices
Access to the Christmas Village is completely free. The Ferris Wheel and certain attractions are subject to a fee (prices displayed on site).
Food and Drink
Numerous chalets offer culinary specialties to take away: mulled wine, hot chocolate, waffles, crepes, tartiflette, raclette, churros, and other Christmas treats. Seated dining areas are also available.
Practical Tips
- Prefer weekday visits to avoid weekend crowds.
- Dress warmly, the market is outdoors.
- Wednesday children's workshops are free but require registration (from 3 PM to 6 PM).
- Friday evening events (blind tests at 5 PM, light processions at 6 PM) are the most festive moments.
