Tribute to the American history of Déols
The Brassioux American Days are a festive and historical event organized by the town of Déols, in the Indre region. This gathering celebrates the historical ties between the Brassioux district and America, in tribute to the military personnel and civilians of the US Air Force who lived there in the 1950s-1960s. The program includes: reconstruction of an American military village, historical exhibitions, concerts, country dancing, open-air cinema, vintage vehicles from the 50s, and a market of local producers. A free, family-friendly, and intergenerational event.
The Brassioux district in Déols holds a unique chapter of Franco-American history. Built to house military personnel and civilians of the US Air Force stationed at the Châteauroux-Déols air base in the 1950s and 1960s, this American village on Berry soil has left indelible marks on local memory. The Brassioux American Days bring this era back to life by offering a unique festive and commemorative event.
Inaugurated in 2025 on the initiative of the town of Déols, in partnership with commemorative associations like Les Amis de La Martinerie, the Brassioux American Days immediately met with popular success. This intergenerational gathering combines culture, history, and festivities to celebrate a shared past with America, as part of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation.
The American Days program transports visitors to 1950s America. A reconstruction of an American military village allows visitors to discover daily life on the site during the American presence. Historical exhibitions trace the construction of the district, life on the site, and the departure of American forces. Informative panels and period testimonies immerse visitors in this little-known period of local history.
Beyond the historical dimension, the Brassioux American Days offer a rich and varied festive program. Visitors can enjoy concerts, country dancing on a large dance floor, demonstrations of flag football and cheerleading, exhibitions of vintage motorcycles and cars from the 50s, vintage pinball machines, open-air cinema, and food trucks. On Monday, a market of local producers allows visitors to discover the flavors of the Berry region in a warm and festive atmosphere.
The Brassioux American Days are part of a duty of remembrance initiative led by the municipality of Déols and local associations. The event reminds us that Berry was, for over a decade, a host territory for thousands of Americans, leaving an architectural, cultural, and human heritage that deserves to be preserved and passed on to new generations.
