Dive into the 17th century with musketeers, fencing, and costumed parades in the Cardinal's city
The Cape et Épée Festival transforms the city of Richelieu into a living 17th-century theater. For a weekend, the city designed by Cardinal Richelieu buzzes to the rhythm of The Three Musketeers: nearly 70 fencers animate duels and fencing scenes on stage and as street performances, hundreds of costumed extras parade through the streets, musicians, dancers, actors, and jugglers take over the squares. Stage fencing workshops, an artisan market, a gastronomic area, pony rides, and fireworks complete this historical and family-friendly festival celebrating the art of the sword in the unique architectural setting of this ideal city.
The city of Richelieu, founded in the 17th century by Cardinal Richelieu, offers an ideal historical setting for this festival celebrating the art of the sword and the swashbuckling spirit dear to Alexandre Dumas. For a weekend, the straight streets, symmetrical squares, and private mansions of this classical city become a natural backdrop for hundreds of extras in costumes of the Grand Siècle.
The Cape et Épée Festival highlights the art of fencing in all its forms. Nearly 70 fencers, specialists in artistic and stage fencing, liven up the festival with spectacular duels, fencing scenes performed on stage and as street performances, and bring the adventures of The Three Musketeers back to life in the streets of the Cardinal's city. Introduction to stage fencing workshops allow visitors to learn the techniques of sword handling.
The highlight of the festival is the grand costumed parade that crosses the city. Hundreds of people in period costumes—musketeers, ladies, Cardinal's guards, gentlemen, maids, and bourgeois—parade through the streets to the sound of 17th-century music. The parade is a spectacle in itself, transforming Richelieu into a true living tableau of the Grand Siècle.
Musicians, dancers, actors, and jugglers take over the squares and streets for continuous entertainment. Street performances combine theater, baroque music, dance, and acrobatics in a festive and participatory atmosphere. Children can enjoy pony rides, old-fashioned games, and creative workshops. Fireworks conclude the festivities on Sunday evening.
An artisan market featuring objects and creations inspired by the 17th century is set up on the Grande Rue, while a gastronomic area offers local specialties and flavorful dishes. Visitors can discover the tastes of southern Touraine in a friendly and festive atmosphere, between sword fights and street performances.
