About Chevaliers du Tastevin

The Chapitres des Chevaliers du Tastevin are the solemn and festive ceremonies of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, held since 1934 at the Château du Clos de Vougeot. Sixteen chapters per year celebrate Burgundy, its gastronomy, and its great wines through gala dinners, initiations, and tastings in this 12th-century historic monument, a major site of the Burgundian vineyard.

Burgundy's Most Famous Wine Brotherhood

The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin was founded in 1934 by Camille Rodier and Georges Faiveley to promote the wines and gastronomy of Burgundy, at a time when the vineyard was going through a severe economic crisis. Since its creation, the brotherhood has organized its Chapters — ritual ceremonies combining initiations, gala dinners, and tastings — at the Château du Clos de Vougeot, a 12th-century Cistercian historic monument.

Sixteen Chapters Per Year

Each season is marked by themed Chapters: the Spring Chapter, the Rose Chapter, the Saint-Vincent Chapter (patron saint of winegrowers), the Saint-Hubert Chapter (autumn), and many others. In total, sixteen Chapters are celebrated each year, bringing together the members of the brotherhood and their guests in the majestic setting of the castle's Cistercian cellar and medieval vat house.

A Centuries-Old Ritual

Each Chapter follows a codified ritual: opening by the Grand Master, initiation of new Knights who take an oath on the tastevin (a small Burgundian tasting cup), followed by a gala dinner in the castle's Grand Cellar. The menus consist of Burgundian dishes accompanied by the region's finest wines. Guests wear the traditional robes and insignia of the brotherhood, creating a solemn and joyful atmosphere.

The Château du Clos de Vougeot

The Château du Clos de Vougeot, built in the 12th century by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux, is the historic seat of the brotherhood. Classified as a historic monument, it houses the largest medieval press in Burgundy and offers a unique setting for the Chapters. The 50-hectare vineyard surrounding it is one of Burgundy's most prestigious grand crus, a symbol of the millennia-old alliance between the vine and heritage.
