The great festive and colorful parade of Val-de-Marne
Every spring, the Carnaval de Créteil takes over the city center with its grand parade of decorated floats, brass bands, costumed groups, and dancers. Organized by the city and local associations, this popular and free event brings together families, children, and adults in a joyful and colorful atmosphere around the values of celebration, creativity, and living together.
The Carnaval de Créteil is one of the highlights of the festive calendar in the prefecture of Val-de-Marne. Every spring, the city is adorned with colors and music to host a popular parade that crosses the streets of the city center, bringing together several thousand inhabitants in a joyful and friendly atmosphere.
The Carnaval de Créteil procession is a true festive parade. Decorated floats created by local associations, schools, and cultural structures parade along the official route, accompanied by brass bands, percussion groups, dance troupes, and costumed flag bearers. Each participant demonstrates boundless creativity in their costumes and decorations, often centered around a theme chosen for the edition.
Spectators, also invited to dress up, line the sidewalks or join the parade along the way, contributing to the general excitement. Children are particularly in the spotlight: Créteil's primary schools often participate in the parade with their own creations, making the carnival a living extension of educational projects.
Throughout the route, music is omnipresent. Street brass bands, samba groups, battucadas, and brass ensembles set the rhythm for the procession. Entertainment is provided in the squares crossed by the parade: street shows, jugglers, fire-eaters, and circus artists liven up the highlights of the route.
The carnival generally concludes with a festive gathering in Créteil's central square, with additional musical entertainment, children's games, a symbolic burning of "King Carnaval," and often a shared snack or distribution of crepes and sweets.
The Carnaval de Créteil is the result of intense collaboration between the City Hall of Créteil, neighborhood associations, community centers, schools, and cultural structures. Months of preparation precede the event: costume-making workshops, float construction in neighborhood centers, brass band rehearsals, and logistical coordination. This collective investment makes the carnival much more than a one-day celebration: it is a unifying process that strengthens ties in the city's neighborhoods.
Each edition of the Carnaval de Créteil is placed under a theme that guides participants' creations. Recurring themes include the worlds of cinema, nature and animals, fairy tales and legends, or world cultures. This thematic framework stimulates participants' imagination while giving visual coherence to the entire parade.
