Festive and participatory parade in the city of a hundred cultures
The Carnaval de Vitry-sur-Seine is a must-attend event in Vitry's festive life. Organized each spring by the Mairie de Vitry-sur-Seine and its many partner associations, it is the living reflection of the cultural diversity and creative energy of this city of over 90,000 inhabitants.
The Carnaval de Vitry parade crosses several neighborhoods of the city, allowing as many residents as possible to watch the procession from their doorstep or to join the procession. The route, announced in advance by the city hall, generally starts in a residential area and ends in the city center or near the town hall, where the final festivities take place.
The procession brings together a wide variety of participants: decorated floats created by neighborhood associations and community centers, brass bands and batucadas with lively rhythms, dance groups (samba, afrobeat, traditional dances), street theater troupes, and of course thousands of costumed people who form the colorful and joyful mass of the procession.
Vitry-sur-Seine is a city of diversity, and its carnival is a reflection of this. Carnival traditions from around the world meet and mingle in the streets: African masks, Caribbean costumes, disguises as Asian fairy tale characters, colorful Latin American outfits. This cultural richness makes the Carnaval de Vitry a unique festival, where each community contributes its own part to the common celebration.
Associations from many cultures organize their own groups within the parade, offering traditional dances, music, and costumes revisited in the spirit of carnival. It is an opportunity for many Vitry residents to discover or rediscover cultural traditions they did not know.
The festival doesn't start on the day of the parade: in the weeks leading up to it, workshops for making costumes and masks are organized in the community centers, neighborhood houses, and schools of Vitry. These workshops, often led by visual artists, allow everyone to participate in collective creation and build bonds between neighbors.
The parade concludes with a large festive gathering with music, activities for children, a shared snack, and, depending on the edition, the burning of the Bonhomme Carnaval or a surprise street performance. It is a moment of strong conviviality where the entire city seems to beat to the same rhythm.
