The Carnival of Saint-Denis: the party in the basilica city
Saint-Denis (93200), a city steeped in history and the royal necropolis of France, hosts an annual popular carnival around Mardi Gras that joyfully and colorfully celebrates the diversity of its population. The city, one of the most cosmopolitan in Île-de-France, transforms its streets into a festive parade that brings together residents of all origins in a spirit of fraternity and conviviality.
A recently created, yet well-established carnival
The Carnival of Saint-Denis is a young festival, with its first editions dating back to the early 2020s. In 2025, the 3rd edition was held on Sunday, March 2nd, under the theme “Hope, dream, and dare”. This carnival takes place within the Christian calendar, just before Ash Wednesday, marking the entry into Lent in a joyful and communal way, in the tradition of European carnivals.
A route steeped in symbolism
The carnival parade starts from the Saint-Denys de l'Estrée church and proceeds to the Saint-Denis Basilica Cathedral, a royal necropolis and a major historical monument. This symbolic route connects two emblematic places of worship in the city, creating a strong link between popular festive tradition and the spiritual and historical heritage of Saint-Denis.
Along the way, costumed participants—families, groups, or individuals—parade to the sound of musicians, percussionists, and street groups. Stands are set up along the route, offering snacks, drinks, and masks for those who arrive without a costume.
Themes and costumes
Each edition of the carnival is centered around an inspiring theme. Previous editions have celebrated light (March towards light), flame (Relight the flame), and hope (Hope, dream, and dare). These poetic and universal themes invite participants to create imaginative costumes and immerse themselves in the festive spirit of the carnival. Costumed children, masked families, and colorful groups of friends create a vibrant festive tableau in the streets of Saint-Denis.
Saint-Denis, a city of festivals and culture
Saint-Denis is a culturally rich city, home to the Festival de Saint-Denis (classical music), the MC93 (cultural center), and numerous artistic structures. The carnival naturally fits into this tradition of popular and participatory events that make the city a vibrant and creative territory, where culture is for everyone.
