The authentic carnival of the Thur Valley
In the Thur Valley, in the heart of the Hautes Vosges d'Alsace, the village of Moosch perpetuates a carnival tradition rooted for decades. Organized by the association Espérance de Moosch, the carnival unfolds over a weekend in February with a festive evening on Saturday and the cavalcade on Sunday. The morning Morgenstreich at 8 a.m., the carnival meal at noon, and the grand cavalcade at 2:30 p.m. punctuate this day of popular festivities, followed by a dancing afternoon and a children's costume contest in the Aloyse Mura hall.
Nestled between Saint-Amarin and Thann, at the foot of the Vosges mountains, the village of Moosch is the guardian of a living and authentic carnival tradition. Every year in February, this small village in the Thur Valley comes alive for a weekend to celebrate carnival the Alsatian way: with warmth, conviviality, and a touch of madness.
Sunday begins spectacularly with the Morgenstreich (literally "the morning strike") at 8 a.m. This tradition, borrowed from Swiss and Rhenish carnivals, consists of a morning procession, often accompanied by drums and lanterns, which marks the official start of the festivities. In the still-sleeping streets of Moosch, the sound of percussion and wind instruments announces that the carnival has begun.
The Moosch carnival unfolds over two days:
The procession sets off through the streets of Moosch in the early afternoon, gathering decorated floats, costumed groups, mischievous Waggis, and musical bands. In this festive and good-natured atmosphere, confetti flies and candy rains down on the spectators lining the route. The cavalcade is followed by a dancing afternoon in the multi-purpose hall and a children's costume contest, which rewards the most creative costumes.
The carnival is organized by L'Espérance de Moosch, a sports and cultural association that enlivens the village life throughout the year. Based at the Aloyse Mura hall (20 rue des Écoles), this association brings together volunteers and enthusiasts to perpetuate the carnival tradition in the Thur Valley, where other neighboring towns like Willer-sur-Thur and Saint-Amarin also organize their own cavalcades.
What makes the charm of the Carnaval de Moosch is its authenticity. Far from large urban parades, this is a human-scale event where the whole village mobilizes. Families prepare their costumes, associations decorate their floats, and everyone participates in this celebration that marks the end of winter and the hope of spring. "It's our village festival!" summarize the inhabitants, and it is this community spirit that gives all the flavor to this Vosges carnival event.
