Charivari: Medieval Magic Invades Billom
Every late August, Charivari transforms the medieval quarter of Billom into a universe populated by fantastic creatures, fire jugglers, and minstrels. As Auvergne's first medieval fantasy festival, this free, family-friendly event has, over its editions, created a unique atmosphere, blending historical reenactment with fantastic imagination.
A Journey Through Time and Imagination
The word "charivari" originates from a medieval ritual: from the 14th century onwards, masked villagers would gather to make noise and create festive disorder. The festival embraces this spirit of popular celebration and joyful transgression, adding a fantasy dimension that transports visitors to a world where the real and the imaginary merge.
A Rich Program of Shows
Charivari offers two days of varied entertainment in the historic streets of Billom:
- Fire Shows: Spectacular nocturnal pyrotechnic performances
- Juggling: Medieval jugglers and acrobats
- Storytelling: Medieval and fantasy tales for all ages
- Medieval Dances: Period dance initiations and shows
- Celtic Folk Concerts: Live music in a medieval spirit
- Medieval Market: Craft and local produce stalls
Billom, Medieval Town
The choice of Billom as the festival location is natural: this small town in the Puy-de-Dôme boasts a remarkable medieval quarter with its half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and preserved architectural heritage. The streets and squares of the historic center become the natural backdrop for shows and entertainment, creating total immersion in the medieval world.
An Associative and Free Festival
Supported by the association Billom Renaissance, Charivari is an entirely free event, open to everyone. This accessibility is part of the festival's DNA, aiming to be a moment of sharing and conviviality for families and fans of medieval and fantasy worlds.
The Chariva'livre
Since its 9th edition, Charivari has been accompanied by Chariva'livre, a book fair dedicated to fantasy literature. Visitors can meet authors, discover new literary universes, and leave with signed books.
