The free student festival of Mulhouse
Chipo'Zik is a free music festival organized every year in May on the Illberg campus of the Université de Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse. Born in 2005 from a modest end-of-year party for student bands, it has become a major event in the Mulhouse cultural calendar, attracting between 6,000 and 7,000 people each year. Entirely organized by volunteer students, the festival offers concerts by professional and emerging bands in a friendly and accessible atmosphere for everyone.
The story of Chipo'Zik began in 2005 with a simple idea: to bring together students from the Illberg campus for concerts and a barbecue to celebrate the end of the academic year. Twenty years later, what was once a modest student party has become a major event in the Mulhouse cultural calendar, attracting between 6,000 and 7,000 people each year to the Université de Haute-Alsace campus.
Chipo'Zik's great strength lies in its complete freeness. Access to concerts is free, allowing everyone—students, families, music lovers—to fully enjoy the program without financial constraints. The festival maintains an open spirit with free entry and exit, in a relaxed and festive atmosphere. The food stalls offer the famous grilled sausages that gave the festival its name, as well as vegetarian options.
While Chipo'Zik remains organized by volunteer students, its programming has reached a remarkable professional level. The festival blends professional bands from the regional and national scene with emerging talents from the Tremplin Chipo'Zik, a music competition that showcases the student and emerging scene. The 2025 edition, which celebrated the festival's 20th anniversary, featured artists such as CelKilt, Bezed'H, Ravage Club, Zocco Baia, and The Crazy Therapy, as well as DJ sets to extend the party.
Each year, the Tremplin Chipo'Zik offers a stage to emerging and student bands from the region. Organized before the main festival—at the Noumatrouff or on campus—this competition allows the winners to perform on the festival's main stage. In 2026, the tremplin took place on March 14th with Archolepsy, Blurry Tale, and No Child Tangerine competing. This commitment to supporting local creation is at the heart of Chipo'Zik's identity.
