Celebration of Luberon AOC olive oil and the flavors of the Pays d'Aigues in the Provençal village of Cucuron
The Cucuron Olive and Terroir Festival celebrates Luberon AOC olive oil and the products of the Pays d'Aigues every autumn in this authentic Provençal village, known for its large 14th-century washhouse basin and its ancient plane trees. Olive oil producers, market gardeners, artisans, and winegrowers from the southern Luberon gather in the Place de l'Étang for a friendly and generous local market, with tastings, entertainment, and festivities in a setting of rare village beauty.
Cucuron is one of the most authentic and endearing villages on the southern slope of the Luberon. Located in the Pays d'Aigues, between La Tour d'Aigues, Ansouis, and Pertuis, this town of some 1,800 inhabitants is known to Provence lovers for its unspoiled character and discreet beauty, far from the over-tourism of some neighbors on the northern slope.
Its most famous monument is the Grand Bassin, or Étang de Cucuron — a huge 14th-century washhouse basin, surrounded by ancient plane trees whose reflections make it one of the most photogenic spots in Provence. The Place de l'Étang, lively with its cafés and terraces reflected in the basin, is one of the most beautiful village squares in Provence and a popular filming location for films and commercials seeking to embody the essence of a Provençal village.
The territory of Cucuron and the Pays d'Aigues has been an olive tree land since antiquity. The Mediterranean climate of the southern Luberon slope — hot and dry summers, mild winters, exceptional sunshine — creates ideal conditions for olive cultivation. The Provençal varieties — Aglandau, Salonenque, Grossane, Bouteillan — yield oils of characteristic aromatic richness, with herbaceous, fruity, and slightly bitter notes that are the signature of the finest Provençal oils.
Olive oil from the Pays d'Aigues benefits from the AOC / AOP Huile d'Olive de Provence, which guarantees the origin and quality of the oils produced in the region. The olive harvest, which takes place from October to January depending on the varieties and climatic conditions, is the highlight of the local agricultural calendar.
The Cucuron Olive and Terroir Festival was born from the desire to celebrate this agricultural and gastronomic heritage while enlivening the village during the new oil season. Organized every autumn — usually in November, when the first oils of the year are available — it brings together olive oil producers from the Pays d'Aigues and the Luberon, olive oil artisans, and a wide range of local producers in the Place de l'Étang.
The stands of millers and olive growers offer comparative tastings of the different oils of the season — early fruity green, black fruity, matured — allowing visitors to understand the diversity of aromatic profiles and production methods. Experts and enthusiasts lead tasting workshops that teach how to distinguish the qualities of an oil, pair it with dishes, recognize defects, and identify the main characteristics of olive varieties.
Around the olive, the local market brings together the riches of the Pays d'Aigues: goat and sheep cheeses from local producers, seasonal fruits and vegetables from organic and conventional market gardeners, lavender and garrigue honey from Luberon beekeepers, artisanal charcuterie, and Côtes du Luberon wines (AOC) offered for tasting by the region's wineries. Artisans and creators complete the market with their ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and olive wood objects.
The Olive Festival is not just a market: it's a festive and lively day. An olive brotherhood or a producers' association organizes ceremonies and demonstrations — olive pressing using traditional and modern methods, explanation of the olive tree's cycle from flower to fruit, comparison of oil mills of yesterday and today.
Local chefs offer culinary demonstrations highlighting olive oil in Provençal cuisine: tapenade, aïoli, pistou, brandade, grilled fish with new oil — traditional and contemporary recipes are presented to give olive oil its rightful place in Provençal gastronomy. Tasting competitions and Provençal games — pétanque, skittles — liven up the Place de l'Étang throughout the day.
Provençal musicians and folk groups provide the musical ambiance of the festival, with songs and melodies from Provence echoing under the ancient plane trees. In the afternoon, a galoubet-tambourin ensemble — emblematic musical instruments of Provence — accompanies traditional dances.
The festival also offers an opportunity to discover the hidden treasures of Cucuron: in addition to the Grand Bassin, the village has a remarkable Notre-Dame de Beaulieu church (11th-16th centuries), an archaeological museum testifying to the ancient human presence on the site, and medieval streets that retain the authenticity of a village not overly restored.
In the immediate vicinity, Ansouis (4 km away) offers its medieval castle, inhabited by the same families for seven centuries, and the most picturesque hilltop village in the Pays d'Aigues. La Tour d'Aigues (6 km away) invites discovery of the Renaissance castle and its earthenware museum. The Côtes du Luberon vineyards stretch between the villages, offering tastings and direct sales to enthusiasts.
