The summer festivals of the lakeside village of Léon between the pond and the pine forest
Every third weekend in July, Léon celebrates its local festival called Festaloun for three days of summer festivities. This lakeside village on the Landes coast, nestled between the Léon pond and the pine forest, offers a program combining bullfighting events, banda concerts, country meals, popular dances, and a fireworks display by the water. Festaloun attracts both year-round residents and the many holidaymakers who stay on the Landes coast in the summer.
Léon, a village of 1,900 inhabitants nestled between the Léon pond and the maritime pine forest on the Landes coast, celebrates its Festaloun every third weekend in July. This local festival brings together residents and holidaymakers in a friendly and festive atmosphere. This summer event is an opportunity to discover Landes traditions in an exceptional natural setting, just a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean.
Léon benefits from a remarkable natural environment. The Léon pond, a Natura 2000 site, and the Courant d'Huchet, nicknamed the "little Amazon of the Landes," offer a bucolic setting for the festivities. The village, with its half-timbered houses and squares shaded by plane trees, is the ideal backdrop for intimate festivals. The proximity of Moliets beach and Léon lake allows festival-goers to combine swimming and festivities.
Festaloun perpetuates Landes bullfighting traditions with events in the arena or on the village square. Landes races, capeas, and bullfighting games offer spectators a glimpse of this age-old Gascon art. The encierros (street bull runs) in the village streets add a dose of adrenaline to the festivities, while the toroball interludes allow everyone to participate in a good-natured atmosphere.
Bandas are an integral part of Festaloun. These street bands parade through the village streets, leading the crowd in a festive musical atmosphere. The free concerts scheduled in the evening feature various bands on the main square. The evenings continue with popular dances and DJ sets, while the peñas' bodegas remain open until the early morning.
Festaloun is punctuated by country meals bringing together hundreds of guests under marquees or outdoors. The menus feature local Landes products: duck, pond fish, sand asparagus, and pastis landais. Food stalls offer tapas, grilled dishes, and local specialties throughout the day. The producers' market allows you to discover the flavors of Côte Landes Nature.
The fireworks display, launched over the pond or from the village center, is the most spectacular moment of Festaloun. The reflections of the rockets in the calm waters of the pond offer a magical spectacle. The relaxed and warm summer atmosphere makes Festaloun an ideal event for holiday families and lovers of authentic Landes festivals.
Festaloun de Léon is held every year on the third weekend of July, from Friday to Sunday. Activities begin in the late afternoon, and evenings extend late.
