2026 Artists

  • Le Bal Taquin — Marie-France Raillard on hurdy-gurdy and Daniel Raillard on diatonic accordion. The duo performs tunes and songs collected in Morvan and Burgundy, opening the festival with a dance workshop for students from the Lycée des Métiers François Mitterrand and Collège Bibracte.
  • Duo Cougny-Millet — Adrien Cougny and Quentin Millet, deeply rooted in the traditional music of the Morvan: collecting, composing, and reinterpreting ancient themes for the dance floor.
  • Faunrusk — Marc Pollier, a master of the uilleann pipes, and his daughter Rose on the harp. Rose Pollier has won several competitions in Brittany, including the Trophée Camac at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in 2023; a classically trained harpist from Angers, she has been perfecting her craft at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon since 2020.
  • Trio Buteau-Desserprit-Joachim — featuring Bastien Buteau, an accordionist native to the Château-Chinon region, with Nathalie Joachim on hurdy-gurdy and Gilles Desserprit on bagpipes, who has trained musicians like Seb Lagrange and Jérôme Thomas in the Morvan repertoire.
  • Ardante — Charles Pouységur on accordion and Théo Bonnaventure on violin. The duo blends Auvergne melodies with other traditions, calling their style "Auvergne Volcanic Music."
  • Duo Biscotte — Marela Sammarone on violin and Adrien Cougny on accordion, specialists in the bal and bourrée.
  • Michael Biggins — A multi-instrumentalist from Newcastle now based in the Glasgow traditional scene, member of TRIP, The Canny Band, and Matawa. In Château-Chinon, he performs a solo piano set.
  • Matawa — Seb Lagrange on accordion, originally from the Morvan and the primary composer of the repertoire, with Grégoire Durand on violin, Michael Biggins on piano, and Didier Billet on drums. The group draws inspiration from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton, and Quebec.
  • Trio Ewen Henderson — Ewen Henderson on violin, a founding member of Mànran, with Seonaidh MacIntyre on Highland bagpipes and flutes (Trail West) and Ross Wilson on piano (Tide Lines). Hailing from Lochaber, the Isle of Mull, and South Uist, all three sing in Gaelic.
  • The Bath Street Boys — An Irish traditional music group composed of four musicians from different regions: Oran Kelly on diatonic accordion, Marty Barry on guitar and vocals, Oisin Duffy on violin, and Aidan Quigney on keyboard.

A festival bridging the Morvan, Ireland, and Scotland

Each year in late September, Château-Chinon hosts musicians from the Morvan, Ireland, and Scotland for four days. The association describes the festival as a gathering for neo-trad musicians from these regions who wish to connect in the Morvan. The program includes concerts in halls, the church, and the cinema, marquee dances, open sessions where everyone is welcome to bring their instrument, and special events for school students.

How the festival began

In 2016, the Irish BBC filmed a documentary in the Morvan about the local, Irish, and Scottish music scenes and sought a venue for an acoustic concert. The town of Château-Chinon provided its auditorium, and the success of this event sparked the idea for the festival. The first edition took place in 2017. There was no festival in 2020 due to Covid, and the 2021 edition was scaled back. Since 2022, the Morvan Festi Rencontres association has officially managed the event, continuing through 2023, 2024, and 2025.
