The big kite festival in Vendée
Since 2003, the Festival À Tout Vent has transformed the central beach of Notre-Dame-de-Monts into an extraordinary open-air theater dedicated to kites. For three days, over 120 kite flyers from France and Europe make giant creations of improbable shapes – octopuses, dragons, whales – dance in the Vendée sky, offering poetic aerial ballets from day until night. Attracting 70,000 visitors each year, this free international event combines creative workshops, wind sports, night shows, and family entertainment on the Esplanade de la Mer.
Born in 2003 from an informal meeting of a few kite enthusiasts in the marshes of Notre-Dame-de-Monts, the Festival À Tout Vent has established itself over two decades as one of the largest European gatherings dedicated to kites. Since 2005, the event has moved to the seafront, taking over the central beach and the Esplanade de la Mer to offer a grandiose spectacle between sky and ocean.
Every first weekend of July, over 120 invited kite flyers from all over Europe deploy their creations above the Vendée dunes. Giant static structures – titanic octopuses, multicolored dragons, majestic whales –, single-line, dual-line, and quad-line performance kites, and hexagonal rokkaku battles make up a constantly moving aerial tableau. At dusk, over 20 illuminated kites dance at sunset, extending the magic into the stars.
Each year, the festival invites performing arts companies that push the boundaries of aerial art. The Compagnie Gratte Ciel, specializing in poetic night performances and vertical art, and the Compagnie Avis de Tempête, creators of dreams at altitude, offer magical shows at 10 PM on the Esplanade. Each edition also honors a guest country that brings its know-how and creativity: in 2025, it was the United Kingdom that was celebrated for its elegance and audacity.
Beyond the aerial show, the festival offers a rich program of activities for all ages. The Wind Village hosts kite making and decorating workshops, introductions to land sailing (from 8 years old) and stand-up paddleboarding (from 12 years old), nature walks, giant board games, and play structures. The Wind Bar livens up the evenings with a DJ from 7 PM on Friday and Saturday. Food is provided by food trucks and restaurants on the Avenue de la Mer.
Organized jointly by the city of Notre-Dame-de-Monts and the association Les Amis d'À Tout Vent, supported by over 70 volunteers and numerous partners, the festival attracts 70,000 visitors each year and brings together over 200 French and European kite flyers. More than a festival, À Tout Vent is a breath of imagination, a celebration of the sky as an infinite stage.
The 23rd edition of the Festival À Tout Vent will take place on the central beach of Notre-Dame-de-Monts for another weekend of kites, aerial shows, and family entertainment. Program and guest country to be announced soon.
