Free music and street arts festival on the Vendée coast
Since 1994, La Déferlante has swept across the Vendée coast every summer with a completely free, open-air artistic program. From Noirmoutier to La Tranche-sur-Mer, via Saint-Jean-de-Monts and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, this traveling festival takes over the squares, esplanades, and seafronts of thirteen seaside resorts. Contemporary circus, street theater, dance, world music, and itinerant performances are offered to all audiences in a festive and friendly atmosphere by the Atlantic.
Born in 1994 in the wake of the national operation "Les Arts au Soleil" (Arts in the Sun), the La Déferlante network has established itself as the unmissable summer event on the Vendée coast. What was initially an initiative supported by three coastal municipalities has become a true traveling festival, now uniting thirteen seaside resorts between Loire-Atlantique and Vendée, from Saint-Brévin-les-Pins in the north to La Tranche-sur-Mer in the south.
The festival is divided into two main events:
The heart of La Déferlante beats to the rhythm of live performance in all its forms: street arts, contemporary circus, itinerant theater, dance, song, world music, and contemporary music. More than a hundred national and international companies perform each year, offering original creations accessible to all ages. From giant puppets to aerial acrobatics, and open-air concerts to participatory performances, each evening is an invitation to discover.
The festival unfolds in thirteen coastal towns:
The strength of La Déferlante lies in its unique model of inter-municipal cooperation. Each town in the network has its own programmer who selects the shows in consultation with the entire network, ensuring artistic coherence while reflecting the identity of each resort. This territorial network allows for the distribution of quality cultural offerings throughout the coastline, entirely free, with no reservations or numbered seating. Culture comes to meet vacationers and residents wherever they are: on the beach, at the market, in the village square.
The 33rd edition of La Déferlante returns to the Vendée coast in 2026 with La Déferlante de Printemps on Ascension weekend and La Déferlante d'Été from July to August. Program and schedule to be discovered on ladeferlante.com.
