International Animation Short Film Festival of Roanne
Created in 2010 by the City of Roanne, the Ciné Court Animé festival has become a must-attend event for animation cinema in France and Europe. Every year in March, for a week, over 220 short animated films from 40 countries are screened in cinemas and cultural venues in the Roannais region, offering a global panorama of animated creation. With its 6 official competitions, exhibitions, cine-concerts, workshops, and meetings with directors, the festival attracts over 11,000 spectators and stands as an international hub for animated film, combining artistic excellence with openness to young audiences.
Since 2010, the Ciné Court Animé festival has transformed the city of Roanne into the capital of animated short films for an entire week in March. Organized by the City of Roanne with the support of Roannais Agglomération, this festival has established itself in a few years as a national and international reference in the field of animation.
Each edition offers the discovery of over 220 films from around forty countries, selected from approximately 3,000 submissions received from 117 countries. This rigorous selection provides a comprehensive overview of animation techniques: 2D, 3D, stop-motion, cut-out, sand animation, glass painting, and many more. The themes covered are just as varied: comedies, animated documentaries, experimental films, music videos, and films for young audiences.
The festival is distinguished by the richness of its competitive program with 6 official competitions:
An international jury composed of directors, producers, and animation cinema specialists deliberates to designate the winners of each competition.
Beyond the screenings, Ciné Court Animé offers a rich and diverse program: exhibitions in museums and cultural venues, original cine-concerts, live performances, virtual reality experiences, creative workshops for children and adults, conferences, and meetings with directors. The festival takes place in about ten partner venues in the Roannais region: cinemas, a museum, a media library, a theater, and a conservatory.
The festival gives a privileged place to young audiences with screenings adapted for 3-6 year olds and 6-12 year olds, school programs for classes from primary to high school, and introductory animation workshops. This educational dimension makes Ciné Court Animé a valuable tool for media literacy and artistic creation education.
Screenings take place in the three cinemas of the Roannais territory: Cinéma Le Grand Palais (Cours de la République, Roanne), Cinéma Espace Renoir (12 bis rue Jean Puy, Roanne), and Cinéma Les Halles in Charlieu. Other cultural venues complete the program: the Musée Joseph Déchelette, the Médiathèque de Roannais Agglomération, the Théâtre de Roanne, and the Conservatoire de Roannais Agglomération.
The 17th edition of the Ciné Court Animé festival will take place from March 16 to 22, 2026, in Roanne. Over 220 animated short films from 40 countries will be screened during 70 hours of programming, featuring 6 official competitions, 10 themed screenings, 2 exhibitions including "Dreaming Miyazaki", 3 cine-concerts, and 1 animated performance. The international jury includes Marie Vieillevie, Samuel Viñolo Locubiche, Camille Gobourg, and Pierre-Luc Granjon.
The Ciné Court Animé festival returns for its 17th edition from March 16 to 22, 2026, once again taking over the cinemas and cultural venues of Roanne and the surrounding region. This edition promises a rich program with over 220 films from 40 countries, offering 70 hours of screenings divided between official competitions and themed sessions.
The 2026 jury brings together four major figures in animation cinema:
Among the highlights of this edition, the "Dreaming Miyazaki" exhibition will pay tribute to the universe of the Japanese animation master through an original immersive experience. A second exhibition will complement the artistic aspect of the festival.
Three original cine-concerts will offer screenings of animated films accompanied by live music, creating a unique sensory experience. An animated performance will enrich the festival's non-screening program.
A dedicated virtual reality space will allow visitors to dive into immersive animated worlds. Creative workshops for children and adults, as well as conferences and meetings with directors, will complete the program throughout the week.
Country panoramas, retrospectives, special programs, and young audience screenings (ages 3-6 and 6-12).
