International watercolor biennale in one of the most beautiful villages in France
The Festival de l'Aquarelle du Bec-Hellouin is a unique artistic biennale in France, organized in one of the most beautiful villages in France, in the heart of Eure in Normandy. Since 2019, the association Le Bec Hellouin Aquarelle has brought together around thirty renowned watercolorists, from France and abroad, for a week of exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations in the village's emblematic locations: the village hall, the church, the Saint-Nicolas tower, and the abbatial lodge. This event celebrates watercolor in all its forms in an exceptional heritage setting, between half-timbered houses and a thousand-year-old abbey.
The Festival de l'Aquarelle du Bec-Hellouin is an artistic biennale dedicated to watercolor, organized in the village of Bec-Hellouin, listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Created in 2019 by the association Le Bec Hellouin Aquarelle, this festival has become a must-attend event for amateurs and professionals of this delicate pictorial technique.
Bec-Hellouin offers an incomparable setting for this festival. This Norman village, with its flowery half-timbered houses, its cobbled streets, and its famous Notre-Dame du Bec Abbey founded around 1034, forms a natural backdrop for artistic contemplation. The exhibitions are spread across several emblematic locations in the village: the village hall, the parish church, the Saint-Nicolas tower, the abbatial lodge, and the cabinet of curiosities, creating a true open-air artistic trail.
Each edition brings together approximately 32 renowned watercolorists from France and abroad. The festival is organized in partnership with the Société Française de l'Aquarelle, ensuring a remarkable level of artistic excellence. The artists exhibit their works in seven different locations in the village, offering visitors a rich and varied discovery trail.
Beyond the exhibitions, the festival offers a rich program of daily activities: introductory and advanced workshops led by about fifteen artists, live demonstrations, discussions on watercolor techniques and history, and artistic performances. These exchange moments allow the public to understand the subtleties of this demanding technique, which plays on the transparency of water and the luminosity of pigments.
The choice of Bec-Hellouin as the venue for the festival is not accidental. The particular light of the Norman countryside, the reflections of the Bec river, and the architectural beauty of the village have inspired artists and writers for centuries. Watercolor, the preferred technique of plein air painters, finds an ideal field of expression here. The opening reception traditionally takes place in the abbey park, a solemn and festive moment that opens a week of artistic celebration.
From one edition to the next, the Festival de l'Aquarelle du Bec-Hellouin is gaining notoriety and ambition. The event attracts visitors from all over France and abroad, contributing to the cultural and tourist influence of the village and the Bernay Terres de Normandie region. Admission to the exhibitions is free, making art accessible to all audiences.
