The traditional giant fouace festival in one of France's most beautiful villages
The Festival of Saint-Barthélemy and La Fouace is the patronal festival of Najac, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, in Aveyron. Every year at the end of August, for three days, the village celebrates Saint Bartholomew and its ancestral culinary specialty: la fouace, a crown-shaped cake flavored with orange blossom. The baker prepares giant fouaces weighing 25 to 45 kilos, nearly 2 meters long, which parade through the village streets to the sound of bandas, before being shared with visitors. Concerts, fireworks, a market, and festive meals complete the program.
La fouace is a crown-shaped brioche, flavored with orange blossom, prepared in Aveyron homes since the Middle Ages for major family events: baptisms, communions, weddings. It was also present on the table during harvests, haymaking, or grape harvests, moments of village gathering. Even today, la fouace embodies conviviality and sharing in Rouergue.
The highlight of the festival, the giant fouace parade is a must-see spectacle. The baker prepares four enormous fouaces weighing between 25 and 45 kilograms and measuring up to 2 meters long by 1 meter wide. Dressed, braided, and adorned with flowers, these giant fouaces parade through the village streets, carried in procession by the inhabitants, surrounded by musicians, dancers, and bandas, before being shared with passers-by.
The Festival of Saint-Barthélemy and La Fouace spans three days, from Saturday to Monday. The program includes a pétanque competition, a traditional market, concerts and bandas, a carnival, festive meals, and a grand fireworks display. The funfair set up for the occasion adds an extra touch of joy for families.
Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, Najac offers a spectacular setting for this traditional festival. Dominated by its 13th-century royal fortress, the village stretched along its rocky ridge above the Gorges de l'Aveyron is a postcard-perfect backdrop for the festivities.
