Celebration of artisanal leather and parchment know-how in Levroux
Every autumn, the medieval town of Levroux celebrates its artisanal heritage during the Festival of Leather, Parchment and Fashion. This free event highlights the leather and parchment trades, ancestral traditions attested since the 12th century in the commune. Demonstrations by artisans, exhibitions, creative workshops, fashion shows and designer stands punctuate this weekend dedicated to arts and crafts and the living heritage of Berry.
The town of Levroux, in the Indre department, is intimately linked to the history of leather and parchment. From the 12th century onwards, Levroux artisans specialized in working with hides, making the town a recognized center for tanning and parchment making. This centuries-old tradition has shaped the identity of the commune, which today houses a Museum of Leather and Parchment retracing this unique artisanal history in Berry.
The Festival of Leather, Parchment and Fashion takes place every year in October at the Gymnase Michel Moulin in Levroux. For two days, artisans, designers and enthusiasts gather to celebrate know-how related to leather, parchment and fashion. Demonstrations by artisans allow visitors to discover the ancestral gestures of tanning, leather goods making, saddlery, shoemaking and parchment making.
A highlight of the festival, the fashion shows showcase creations by designers and leather goods makers who work with leather in all its forms: clothing, accessories, jewelry and art objects. A dedicated space for designer stands allows visitors to discover and purchase unique pieces made by local and regional artisans. Fashion and craftsmanship meet in a spirit of creativity and transmission.
Participatory workshops are offered for all ages: introduction to leatherworking, discovery of calligraphy on parchment, making small leather items and creative activities for children. These workshops allow participants to learn the gestures of the artisans and leave with a personal creation. Thematic exhibitions complete the program, highlighting the history and evolution of leather and parchment trades.
Organized by the association Levroux Cuir et Parchemin with the support of the Levroux town hall, the festival is entirely free. It helps to promote the artisanal heritage of the medieval town and to pass on the passion for leather and parchment trades to new generations. It is a unique event in Centre-Val de Loire for lovers of arts and crafts, fashion and living heritage.
