When Alpine horns resonate in the mountains of Haut-Doubs
The Festival du Cor des Alpes du Russey is a unique event in Franche-Comté celebrating Alpine musical tradition through concerts of Alpine horn groups. Every summer, the small commune of Russey in Haut-Doubs hosts horn players from all over France and neighboring Switzerland. The festivities unfold in the village streets, in front of the church, and in the village hall, offering an authentic sound journey into the heart of the Jura mountains. A friendly and popular gathering that perpetuates a centuries-old Alpine musical heritage.
Nestled in the Haut-Doubs, a few kilometers from the Swiss border, the village of Russey hosts a unique musical event each year: the Festival du Cor des Alpes. This event celebrates one of the most emblematic instruments of Alpine culture, a long wooden horn whose deep and powerful sounds carry for several kilometers across the valleys and ridges of the Jura.
The festival takes place over a full day, marked by several musical highlights. From 10 a.m., Alpine horn groups take over the streets of Russey for roving concerts, creating a festive and surprising atmosphere in the heart of the village. At 11 a.m., all the players gather in front of the church of Russey for an impressive collective concert, where the resonance of the horns blends with the village architecture.
In the afternoon, at 2 p.m., each group performs individually in the village hall, allowing the public to discover different styles and repertoires. The festival culminates at 4 p.m. with a grand ensemble concert bringing together all the participants, a moment of grace where dozens of horns resonate in unison in a magnificent finale.
The Festival du Cor des Alpes du Russey testifies to the cultural proximity between the Jura mountains and the Swiss Alps. Originally a pastoral instrument used for communication between shepherds in the alpine pastures, the Alpine horn has become a recognized and appreciated musical symbol far beyond its Swiss cradle. The festival attracts horn ensembles from Switzerland, Franche-Comté, and all of France, making Russey a crossroads of mountain musical traditions.
Russey is a dynamic commune in the Haut-Doubs plateau, located at an altitude of about 850 meters. In addition to the Festival du Cor des Alpes, the town also hosts the Pop'Cornes Festival, a more contemporary music event. The exceptional natural setting of the Jura Mountains, with its spruce forests, pastures, and panoramas of the Swiss Alps, adds a unique landscape dimension to this festival that skillfully blends culture, conviviality, and mountain authenticity.
