Interdisciplinary laboratory of relational identities
ICE (Contemporary Interdisciplinary Writings) is an interdisciplinary laboratory on relational identities that explores contemporary writings through performing arts, literature, cinema, and visual arts. Directed by artist Patricia Allio since 2016, the festival puts the margins at the center by making minority voices visible: linguistic, political, sexual, and gender. Each year, ICE brings together residents and international artists in Finistère, at the end of the world, to invent new forms of expression and create spaces for dialogue and resonance.
The ICE Festival (Contemporary Interdisciplinary Writings) is a unique collective adventure that has been unfolding since 2016 in the Pays de Morlaix, in Finistère. Directed by artist Patricia Allio, ICE defines itself as an interdisciplinary laboratory on relational identities, exploring contemporary forms of writing through performing arts, literature, cinema, and visual arts.
At the heart of the ICE project is a strong desire: to put the margins at the center. For ten years, the festival has been working on forms that seek to make minority voices visible - linguistic, political, sexual, and gender - and to create spaces for dialogue and resonance. Each edition is structured around the unifying theme "Self-portrait with", a proposal that invites us to think of identity as a fragile relationship and composition.
The festival unfolds itinerantly between Morlaix (notably at the SEW, the cultural platform installed in the former Tobacco Factory), Brest, and the founding towns of Saint-Jean-du-Doigt and Plougasnou. This location by the sea, in this Finistère described as "the end of the land, at the end of the world", creates a unique setting for these multidisciplinary encounters that bring together residents and international artists.
The festival celebrated its 10th edition in September 2025, marking a decade of audacity and reinvention. Among the highlights: the 2023 edition "Self-portrait with Matrimoine" which revisited heritages by unearthing fabulous stories and giving voice to forgotten or marginalized figures, particularly invisible female voices. More than 80 artists, writers, and thinkers have participated in the various editions, creating a creative galaxy around the festival's themes.
ICE benefits from the support of the DRAC Bretagne, the Regional Council of Brittany, the Departmental Council of Finistère, as well as the towns of Plougasnou, Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, and Morlaix Communauté, testifying to the strong territorial anchoring of this exceptional cultural project.
Festival ICE takes place mainly at the SEW (New cultural space(s) in Morlaix), located in the former Tobacco Factory at 39 ter, quai du Léon, 29600 Morlaix. The festival also extends to Brest, Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, and Plougasnou.
The SEW is a 5,000 m² space dedicated to culture, open to all audiences, 365 days a year. Accessible in the city center of Morlaix, the venue is easily accessible by public transport and has parking nearby.
