Free festival of African culture in the heart of Foix
The Ingénieuse Afrique Festival is a free cultural event that celebrates the richness and diversity of African culture in Foix, Ariège. Created in 1997, it offers three days of concerts, artisan market, African food, exhibitions, and shows every first weekend of August on Place Parmentier and in the city gardens. The 2026 edition will mark the 30th anniversary of the organizing association.
Since 1997, the Ingénieuse Afrique festival has made the city of Foix vibrate with the colors of the African continent every first weekend of August. For three days, Place Parmentier, the Jardin de la Passéjade, the Halle aux Grains, and the town hall rooms are transformed into a festive and warm African village. This entirely free festival attracts nearly 15,000 visitors each year, making Foix a crossroads of African cultures in the south of France.
The music program mixes world music, afrobeat, traditional percussion, and contemporary African music. Musical parades liven up the streets with sabar percussion and the captivating rhythms of Mandingo music. Storytellers and theater companies transport the audience into African oral traditions through storytelling and "paroles de calebasse" (words from the calabash) performances. Dance also plays a central role with demonstrations and workshops open to all.
The artisan market set up on Place Parmentier features creations by artisans from Africa and the diaspora: jewelry, fabrics, sculptures, decorative objects, and traditional clothing. African cuisine offers a taste journey through the continent's kitchens: mafé, thiéboudienne, yassa, skewers, and pastries. Visitors are enveloped in a colorful atmosphere where musical performances, crafts, and flavors blend harmoniously.
The festival also offers exhibitions by African painters, sculptors, and photographers, documentary film screenings, and workshops to discover African cultural practices. Organized by the association Ingénieuse Afrique, presided over by Flora Bastide, the festival is supported by the City of Foix, the Departmental Council of Ariège, and the Occitanie Region. The 2026 edition will celebrate the association's 30th anniversary with an exceptional program.
