International festival of committed cinema and debates in Foix
The Festival Résistances is a non-competitive international film festival held annually in July in Foix, Ariège. Founded in 1997 by Catherine Dubuisson and Marc Saracino, it offers over 100 committed films – documentaries, features, animations, shorts and features – accompanied by debates with directors and activists. For 9 days, the festival offers an alternative view of the world through cinema rarely shown in theaters.
Since 1997, the Festival Résistances has established itself as one of the major events for committed cinema in France. Born from the desire to promote cinema that questions, disturbs, and enlightens, it carries within it the spirit of resistance that animates the lands of Ariège. Every summer, for 9 days, the town of Foix transforms into a space for meetings, screenings, and debates around more than 100 films from all over the world.
The festival's program is structured around four societal themes and a geographical focus that highlights the cinema of a region of the world. Poignant documentaries, sharp fictions, impactful animated shorts, historical works or previews: the festival knows no genre constraints. The selected films question power relations, collective memory, ecology, social struggles, and identity issues.
Beyond the screenings, the festival is a place for debates and exchanges between spectators, directors, and invited activists. The discussions that follow each session are the living heart of Résistances, transforming cinema into a tool for collective reflection. The festival also offers a young audience program, aperitif concerts, exhibitions, and free outdoor screenings that liven up the evenings in Foix.
The festival is organized by the association Regard Nomade, composed of a collective and thematic committees who voluntarily participate in film selection. This horizontal and activist organization gives Résistances its unique identity: a festival made by citizens for citizens, where cinema is a vector of emancipation and social transformation. Since its creation, the festival has welcomed tens of thousands of spectators and has established itself as a must-see cultural event in the Occitanie region.
The 30th edition of the Festival Résistances will be held from July 3 to 11, 2026 in Foix. For this emblematic anniversary, the festival promises an exceptional program with over 100 committed films, debates, outdoor screenings, and special events to celebrate thirty years of committed cinema in Ariège.
