The leading European festival for film music, born in Aubagne, now in Marseille
The Festival International Music & Cinema (MCM), formerly the Festival International du Film d'Aubagne, is a unique cinematic and musical event in Europe. Created in 1999 by the ALCIMÉ association, this festival has forged its identity around a singular theme: film music and the meeting between composers and filmmakers. For a week each spring, it presents around 250 films in competition and out of competition, hosts over 700 professionals from around the world, and attracts more than 25,000 spectators.
Born in Aubagne, the festival grew in this town in the Pays d'Aubagne et de l'Étoile for over twenty years, contributing to the region's cultural influence. In 2022, the festival moved to the Artplexe Canebière cinema in Marseille, expanding its audience and ambitions while maintaining its ties with Aubagne. This move was accompanied by a name change, becoming Music & Cinema Marseille, but the founding philosophy remains intact: to discover emerging talents and celebrate musical creation for film.
The festival's program is structured around four main axes: the emergence of young talents through short and feature film competitions, cultural diversity through international programs, training with master classes in musical composition under the aegis of SACEM, and film education. Cine-concerts are highlights of each edition, combining film screenings with live musical performances by orchestras and soloists.
Each year, the festival presents the Best Film Music Award, a highly coveted award for composers worldwide. Successive editions have hosted major figures from cinema and film music: Oscar-winning composers, emerging and established directors, renowned pianists, and orchestras. Conferences, freely accessible, allow festival-goers to meet professionals and understand the behind-the-scenes of musical creation for cinema.
The Master Class in Musical Composition for Film, organized under the aegis of SACEM, is an intensive training program that brings together young composers selected from around the world each year. Mentored by an established composer, they work for ten days on scoring short films, culminating in the recording of their creations with a professional orchestra. This initiative makes the festival a true laboratory for contemporary creation in film music.
The Festival International Music & Cinema will return for its 27th edition in Spring 2026 in Marseille. The festival will continue its mission to promote film music and young cinematic creation, with its short and feature film competitions, cine-concerts, SACEM Master Class, and professional meetings. The full program will be announced in early 2026.
The festival takes place at the Artplexe Canebière cinema, Marseille, as well as in various partner venues (La Criée, MUCEM).
