Traveling theater festival in the Pays de Montmédy
The Les Ombres des Soirs Traveling Festival is a theater event that tours the villages and heritage sites of the Pays de Montmédy, in the northern Meuse region. For about ten days at the end of July, the Les Ombres des Soirs company presents around twenty performances—ranging from improvisations and musical storytelling to monologues and literary adaptations—in unique, history-steeped locations. This traveling festival visits some twenty different communes to bring vibrant, accessible theater to rural areas.
The Les Ombres des Soirs Traveling Festival is a unique theatrical adventure that takes over the villages and heritage sites of the Pays de Montmédy every summer, nestled at the crossroads of the Meuse, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The Les Ombres des Soirs company drives this artistic project with a mission to bring theater to places it rarely reaches, connecting directly with local residents.
The festival's originality lies in its itinerant nature: shows are performed in unusual and historic spots—churches, farm courtyards, ruins, gardens, and village squares—which serve as natural backdrops for the performances. This staging, in direct dialogue with the landscape, creates a unique intimacy between the artists and the audience.
Each edition features around twenty performances across a variety of genres. The festival blends classical theater, contemporary creations, storytelling, and performance art to appeal to a wide and diverse audience.
The festival travels through about twenty communes in the northern Meuse, contributing to the cultural vitality of this rural border region. By visiting even the smallest villages, Les Ombres des Soirs creates a unifying event that brings locals and visitors together around the performing arts. The festival also helps showcase the region's built and natural heritage.
True to its commitment to popular theater, the festival is open to everyone. The open-air performances in unique settings offer an immersive and friendly theatrical experience. The festival is an invitation to wander, discover, and be amazed.
The 5th edition of the Les Ombres des Soirs Traveling Festival returns to the villages and heritage sites of the Pays de Montmédy for a week and a half of open-air traveling theater.

By car: Montmédy is located in the northern Meuse, about 1 hour from Verdun via the D964 and D643, and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Metz via the A4 and D643. As the festival is itinerant, performance locations change daily. The detailed program with precise addresses for each show is released before the festival on the company's website and social media. A vehicle is essential to travel between the various villages.
By train: The nearest stations are Longuyon (Meurthe-et-Moselle, approx. 30 km away) and Sedan (Ardennes, approx. 40 km away). From there, Montmédy is accessible by car or taxi. There is no public transport connecting the festival villages directly.
Location: Villages and heritage sites of the Pays de Montmédy (55600). The festival tours about twenty communes in the northern Meuse.
Duration: About ten days at the end of July, with performances in the late afternoon and evening.
Shows: Held outdoors and in heritage sites (churches, farmyards, gardens, ruins). Performances go ahead in all weather conditions, except in extreme circumstances.
We highly recommend bringing weather-appropriate clothing (windbreakers, rain gear) and comfortable shoes for moving between sites. Some shows take place outdoors on uneven ground. You may also want to bring a folding chair or a blanket for open-air performances. A flashlight can be useful for returning home after dark.
Several gîtes, bed and breakfasts, and campsites are available in the Pays de Montmédy. It is advisable to book in advance during the festival period. The Montmédy Tourist Office can assist you with your accommodation search.
