Medieval festival at the foot of the Shoulder of Gallardon
The Medieval Festival of Gallardon is a historical event organized at the Parc des Oseraies and in the center of this town in Eure-et-Loir. For two days, Viking, Celtic, and 13th-century camps recreate medieval life. Combat demonstrations, fire shows, Celtic ceremonies, blacksmithing and coin minting, medieval games for all. Gallardon, dominated by the remains of its keep called the Shoulder, offers an ideal heritage setting. Free admission.
Each year, in May, the town of Gallardon in Eure-et-Loir organizes its Medieval Festival, an event that transports visitors centuries back in time. Dominated by the imposing remains of its 12th-century keep, nicknamed "l'Épaule de Gallardon" (the Shoulder of Gallardon), this small town of character has a rich medieval past that naturally lends itself to this type of festivity.
At the Parc des Oseraies, historical camps are set up for the weekend. Viking, Celtic, and 13th-century camps recreate daily medieval life with great fidelity: period tents, recreated costumes, utensils, tools, weapons, and military equipment immerse visitors in the atmosphere of medieval times. The reenactors, passionate about living history, animate these camps continuously and readily share their knowledge with the public.
Activities punctuate the two days of the festival. Demonstrations of combat techniques with swords, axes, and archery allow visitors to understand the art of medieval warfare. A recreated blacksmithing area welcomes visitors for demonstrations of metalworking and coin minting, while Celtic ceremonies and reenactments of historical battles, such as the Battle of Taillebourg, add a spectacular dimension to the event.
The evenings are marked by impressive fire shows — fire-eaters, flame jugglers — that illuminate the park with a magical and enchanting atmosphere.
The Medieval Festival of Gallardon is a resolutely family-friendly event. Medieval games accessible to all — jousting, stilts, archery, throwing games — allow both young and old to try out medieval entertainment. Artisans showcase their traditional skills and offer participatory workshops to discover the crafts of the past.
The festival extends into the historic center of Gallardon, where visitors can explore the picturesque streets, half-timbered houses, and the remains of the town's medieval fortifications. The Shoulder of Gallardon, the remains of a leaning circular keep that has defied the laws of gravity since the 12th century, is the emblem of this town of character that happily combines past and present.
