Medieval journey in the heart of the castle and old village of Tourrette-Levens
The Medieval Festival of Tourrette-Levens, named "Medieval Journey", immerses visitors and locals in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages at the foot of the castle and in the alleys of the old village. Organized by the Tourist Animation Office in collaboration with the Compagnons de la Tourrentelle, this free day offers knight fights, medieval workshops for children, ancient music and dances, fire-breathers, and medieval catering. The castle transforms into a historical playground while the village comes alive with troubadours and jugglers.
Each year, the perched village of Tourrette-Levens, located in the hinterland of Nice just 15 km from Nice, hosts its Medieval Festival. This event, supported by the Tourist Animation Office and the association Les Compagnons de la Tourrentelle, a member of the French Federation of Historical Festivals and Shows, transforms the castle and the heart of the village into a living stage dedicated to the Middle Ages.
From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the castle becomes an adventure playground for children: combat workshops, introduction to weaving, medieval face painting, and discovery of medieval plants in the castle garden. Younger children can try archery, calligraphy, and games of the era. Adults can enjoy guided tours of the castle and exhibitions on daily life in the Middle Ages.
From 6 p.m. onwards, the heart of the old village comes alive with musicians, jugglers, fire-breathers, and interactive shows. Five local and regional companies offer lively performances blending theater, dance, and traditional music. The medieval alleys of the village provide a natural and authentic setting for these performances. Knight fights in armor, demonstrations of ancient fencing, and dubbing ceremonies are among the most anticipated moments of the evening.
On-site catering offers a culinary journey between medieval traditions and local specialties: grilled meats, crêpes, Niçois socca, and historical dishes prepared on-site. Visitors can enjoy these dishes in a friendly and festive atmosphere, seated in the alleys of the old village or on the castle square.
All entertainment is offered free of charge and open access, making this medieval festival a popular and family-friendly event. The village is easily accessible thanks to free parking at the entrance of the village and served during the day by bus line 19 from Nice. The Compagnons de la Tourrentelle, passionate about medieval history, bring their expertise in historical reenactment to ensure the authenticity of the entertainment and costumes.
The Tourrette-Levens Castle, whose origins date back to the 12th century, offers a striking historical setting for this event. Overlooking the village and the Paillon valley, it also houses the Butterfly Museum and the Natural History Museum. The medieval festival enhances this remarkable architectural heritage and contributes to the cultural influence of the village.
The Medieval Journey returns in May 2026 to Tourrette-Levens with a new edition of the medieval festival at the castle and in the old village. Program and dates to be confirmed.
