Flamenco comes to Nice
The Festival Flamenco de Nice is an artistic event that celebrates one of the most exciting living arts in the world each year: flamenco. Inscribed on the intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO since 2010, flamenco is a total art form that blends dance, song, and music in an expression of rare intensity. The Nice festival contributes to the influence of this art on the French Riviera, a region historically linked to Mediterranean culture and Spain.
The Théâtre Lino Ventura, a setting for flamenco
The festival takes place at the Théâtre Lino Ventura, a municipal performance venue with 700 seats located in the Ariane district of Nice. Inaugurated in 1992, this versatile theater regularly hosts contemporary music concerts, theater, and dance. Its refined acoustics and intimate capacity make it an ideal place to appreciate the subtleties of flamenco, where every zapateado (foot stomp), every quejío (singer's cry), and every rasgueo (guitar strum) resonates with striking clarity.
World-renowned artists
Throughout its editions, the Festival Flamenco de Nice has hosted high-quality artists from Spain and France. Bailaores (dancers) such as José Maya and Isabel Gazquez, cantaores (singers) such as Jesús de La Manuela and Cristo Cortés, guitarists such as Antón Fernández, and percussionists such as José “Bouba” Deleria have carried the flame of flamenco on the Nice stage.
Between tradition and contemporary creation
The festival is not limited to reproducing traditional forms of flamenco. It also gives prominence to contemporary creation, with shows that revisit the codes of this ancestral art. Original creations blending flamenco with contemporary music, flamenco with contemporary dance, or flamenco with digital arts demonstrate the vitality and evolutionary capacity of this art form. The Nice audience can thus discover all facets of flamenco, from its Andalusian roots to its most avant-garde expressions.
A cultural bridge between France and Spain
Nice, due to its geographical position on the Mediterranean and its historical ties to Latin cultures, is a natural home for flamenco. The Festival Flamenco de Nice helps to weave cultural links between France and Spain, offering the Azuréen public privileged access to one of the richest artistic expressions of the Iberian Peninsula. The festival also participates in the training of young artists by offering workshops and masterclasses alongside the performances.
