Classical, contemporary, and jazz music in the Cloister of the Cimiez Monastery
The Nice Classic Festival (Nice Classic Live) is a summer festival of classical, contemporary, and jazz music organized in Nice by the Académie Internationale d'Été de Nice. For nearly three weeks, it brings together great artists and young talents from the Academy for recitals, thematic concerts, new creations, and jazz evenings, in the exceptional setting of the Cloître du Monastère de Cimiez and the Auditorium du Musée Matisse.
Nice Classic Live, renamed Nice Classic Festival, is an unmissable summer event for lovers of classical, contemporary, and jazz music on the French Riviera. Every summer, the festival takes over the Cloister of the Cimiez Monastery, a 16th-century architectural gem nestled on Cimiez hill, in the heart of a park planted with centuries-old olive trees. This exceptional setting, both intimate and majestic, offers remarkable natural acoustics for open-air concerts.
The festival is directed by pianist Marie-Josèphe Jude, an internationally renowned artist and director of the Académie Internationale d'Été de Nice. Under her direction, the Nice Classic Festival offers a demanding and eclectic program, blending major classical repertoires, contemporary creations, and jazz evenings. The artistic director invites exceptional musicians and supports young talents from the Academy, creating an intergenerational dialogue at the heart of the festival.
The Nice Classic Festival offers about twenty concerts spread over three weeks, from mid-July to early August. The main concerts take place in the Cloister of the Monastery in the evening, while lunchtime concerts are organized at the Auditorium of the Matisse Museum. The program includes themed evenings: "Three Pianos Under the Stars," "Old and New Worlds," "Flute in the Wind, Trout on the Line," "Tales, Gardens, and Passions," "The Night of the Piano"... Each concert is a unique musical journey.
One of the unique features of the Nice Classic Festival is its limited capacity of 400 seats. This deliberate choice guarantees exceptional proximity between the artists and the audience, creating a warm and immersive atmosphere. The semi-open setting of the cloister, surrounded by greenery, allows you to enjoy music under the stars while benefiting from quality acoustics. Spectators experience a rare musical experience, far from impersonal large halls.
The festival is closely linked to the Académie Internationale d'Été de Nice, which hosts young musicians from around the world each year for masterclasses and courses taught by leading artists. The festival's concerts regularly feature performances by the academy students, offering the public the chance to discover the future stars of classical music. This educational and transmission dimension is at the core of the Nice Classic Festival project.
The Cimiez Monastery, founded in the 9th century by Benedictine monks and rebuilt in the 16th century, is one of Nice's most emblematic sites. Its cloister, gardens, and church house artistic treasures, including works by Louis Bréa. The site is adjacent to the Matisse Museum and the Roman arenas of Cimiez, offering festival-goers a complete cultural tour on Nice's historic hill. Free admission for under-25s demonstrates the festival's commitment to accessibility.
The 9th edition of the Nice Classic Festival takes place from July 21st to August 9th, 2026 at the Cloister of the Cimiez Monastery and the Auditorium of the Matisse Museum in Nice. Under the artistic direction of pianist Marie-Josèphe Jude, it offers a program mixing recitals, thematic concerts, creations, contemporary music, lyrical music, and jazz evenings, performed by invited artists and the young musicians of the Nice International Summer Academy.
