World Dances and Music Festival now discontinued (Murat, Cantal)
There is no edition scheduled in 2026 for this event. This page remains accessible to archive the history of the manifestation and will be updated if a new edition is announced.
ℹ️ Festival discontinued. The Mondes Croisés Festival no longer seems to be held today. The last publicly documented editions date back to the late 2000s (23rd edition in August 2008, edition from August 5 to 9, 2010) and no recent edition has been announced by the City of Murat or the organizing association. This page is kept as an archive to preserve the memory of this event.
Created in 1986 by the Mondes Croisés association, the festival was born from the desire to showcase musical and choreographic traditions from around the world in an exceptional setting: the medieval city of Murat, nestled at the foot of the majestic Rocher de Bonnevie, in the heart of the Monts du Cantal. Over the years, the event had become one of the most important cultural gatherings in the department.
Each summer, the festival hosted a dozen professional troupes from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Oceania. Over the editions, the public was able to discover traditions as varied as Balinese dances, West African percussion, flamenco, Georgian polyphonic chants, Gypsy music, and traditional Brazilian dances. Several hundred artists — musicians, singers, and dancers — performed during the week, offering a panorama of global cultural richness.
The festival took over the entire city of Murat with a diverse program: indoor shows at the Municipal Gymnasium, street parades in the medieval alleys, public square entertainment, cabaret evenings, and discovery workshops. The Festival Chalet, located in Place du Balat, served as a welcome and ticket office throughout the event.
The originality of the Mondes Croisés Festival also lay in its outreach: beyond Murat, the invited troupes performed in several associated communes in Cantal and neighboring departments, allowing them to reach a wider rural audience and bring world culture to areas far from major urban centers.
After more than twenty editions, the Mondes Croisés Festival no longer seems to be organized: no recent edition has been announced, and the event no longer appears among Murat's flagship events. If a new edition were ever to be relaunched, the information would be updated here. In the meantime, this page bears witness to an event that long celebrated world dances and music in the heart of Cantal.
ℹ️ 2026 edition cancelled — festival currently on hold. No 2026 edition of the Festival Mondes Croisés is announced in Murat. The event, which celebrated world dances and music in the heart of Cantal since 1986, no longer seems to be organised: the last publicly documented editions date back to the late 2000s.
