The wildlife photography and film festival in the heart of the Bugey
Each May, the Festival Nature Ain brings together nature photographers, wildlife filmmakers and nature enthusiasts in Hauteville-Lompnès, on the Hauteville plateau in the Bugey. Over three days, the festival features around twenty photography exhibitions, documentary film screenings, biodiversity conferences, guided nature walks and workshops. Sponsored by prominent environmental advocates, this event has become a must-attend for wildlife photography in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
Since 2014, the Festival Nature Ain has taken over the Hauteville plateau in Hauteville-Lompnès, Ain department, each year to celebrate nature through photography, film and art. This event, free for children under 12, draws thousands of visitors who come to discover biodiversity through the eyes of renowned nature photographers and filmmakers.
The heart of the festival beats to the rhythm of photography exhibitions. Each edition showcases the works of around twenty nature photographers across multiple venues: the salle des fêtes, the boulodrome, the centre social and the casino of Hauteville-Lompnès, offering an immersive journey into the wild.
The Novelty cinema hosts a rich program of documentary screenings on nature and wildlife. Conferences by scientists, naturalists and explorers address major biodiversity conservation issues.
The festival offers guided nature walks around Hauteville-Lompnès, on the plateau and at the Vaux marshes. Led by local naturalists, these walks allow visitors to discover mountain flora, observe birds and learn field photography. Creative workshops include wildlife sculpture, naturalist drawing and photography techniques.
Each year, the festival hosts a nature photography competition open to all photographers. Winning works are exhibited at the festival.
Beyond photography, the festival welcomes artists inspired by nature: wildlife painters, sculptors, illustrators and printmakers. Some fifteen naturalist associations, specialist publishers, nature travel agencies and photography equipment manufacturers round out the offering.
At 850 meters altitude on the Hauteville plateau, in the Haut-Bugey, the festival enjoys a remarkable natural setting. Between fir forests, flowering meadows, peat bogs and marshes, the plateau offers rich preserved biodiversity — the ideal backdrop for a nature-focused event.
