About Festival of the Mules

The Festival of the Mules of Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda, also known as the Festival of the Mules or the Festival of Saint Eloi's Day, is a centuries-old Catalan tradition held annually around June 25th, the feast day of Saint Eloi, patron saint of muleteers. Mules adorned with pompoms and studded collars parade through the town's streets to the sound of the cobla, accompanied by children in traditional Catalan costume. The procession culminates in front of the church where the priest blesses the animals and small loaves of bread, symbols of prosperity, in a moving ceremony that perpetuates the ancestral bond between humans and animals in the Pyrenean valleys.

The Festival of the Mules: a living Catalan tradition

In Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda, the Festival of the Mules honors these animals that for centuries have traveled the paths on both sides of the Pyrenean border. This celebration of Saint Eloi's Day, patron saint of muleteers, perpetuates a tradition deeply rooted in the culture of the Vallespir.

The procession and the blessing

The mules, harnessed with pompoms and studded collars, parade through the town's streets to the sound of the cobla, a traditional Catalan instrumental ensemble composed exclusively of Catalan instruments. Children in traditional costume accompany the procession, which winds through the streets to the church square to receive the priest's blessing.

The loaves of prosperity

During the ceremony, the priest blesses the mules as well as small loaves of bread, symbols of prosperity. The mules, adorned in Catalan colors, then carry these loaves from house to house, perpetuating a gesture of generosity and sharing.

A tribute to Pyrenean heritage

This festival pays homage to the essential role of mules in the history of the Pyrenees, where they were used to transport goods and people across mountain passes and trails. Today, the Festival of the Mules is one of the most authentic and moving traditions of Northern Catalonia.
